what to do to a used engine before the transplant
So I picked up a low mileage engine to toss in my new to me disco 2 that needed a new one due to a cracked #6 sleeve. before I was going to put the new engine back in the truck I was going to tackle some oil leaks and hopefully address any future ones so here is my plan and someone please chime in if something is over board or if I missed something
new valley pan gasket and all the other intake gaskets along the way new rocker cover gaskets new rear main seal and crucifix seals clean the oil pain and pick up new front main seal new front cover gasket new oil pump figure cant hurt while i'm in there right? new timing chain and gears another cant hurt while i'm in there ???? |
How many miles are on the new block? If you're close to 60,000 miles you might as well do the heads. I'd hate to do all that work and have a bull**** head gasket leak pop.
But basically if you do everything you listed plus heads you're putting a new engine in the truck. |
the motor was tested and there was no signs of head gasket failure it has 75k on it from a totaled truck with rear end damage. did a leak down test and chemical test for exhaust gases in the coolant. I know that there is a possibility that the head gaskets will go in the near future but I am willing to take a gamble on it. The plan was to have the old block re sleeved with top hat liners from D&D fabrications since they are literally just down the road from me but he is 4 weeks out at the soonest waiting on liners from the foundry. So in goes a used engine since I need a truck since my old D1 has sold. I will be still be rebuilding the old engine to 4.6 specs and will put it in when I have time
|
How about some pictures along the way? Cleanup valve train? Don't forget a couple of dabs of loctite on the oil pickup bolts.
|
If it's a 4.6 when you drain the oil check for cam bearing shavings in the oil. It happens....I'd just rather not explain how I know.
|
When I installed mine- I reused all the wiring harnesses, etc- BUT before doing so, I rewrapped all old wires, cables, etc to look showroom new. Maybe not the biggest deal, but sure made it look good
|
Madlands-The engine going in now is just a 4.0 just like my 01 came with the old block that will be rebuilt later will be a 4.6 but will be inspecting the bearings while I'm In there
Buzz-I will be taking a ton of pictures so I will update this post along the way Russburcham- I was looking at the wiring harness today thinking about doing the same thing since the old wiring protection is starting to fall apart In places Just spent today ordering parts and decreasing the engine bay still have more to go |
I'm a glass is half full kinda guy, I'd change the plugs and wires, the engine oil of course, drop it in and go.
If it runs to well you'll never have your old one rebuilt. |
Spike If it runs good then I will more than likely just keep it in there half of me hopes so the other half just wants a reason to rebuild a motor either way ill be happy
|
oil pump, timing chain & head gaskets, rear main seal, bare minimum
