What the hell were they thinkin?
Disco II 2000-
Wimpy plastic trim around front window. Sunroof Drains that break. Wipers you can only replace from a dealer. Wiper motor that dies under 100.000 miles. Compressor that dies under 100.000 miles. Air bags that die under 100.000 miles. Lug nuts that warp and can't be removed. Leaking windows. Headlight Covers are fragile and not water tight. Driving lights a mere few inches off the ground. Center Diff lock exists, but they don't through in a shifter for it. ABS controlled hill decent control becuase the ABS doesn't disconnect in 4lo creating a death trap off road. Non greasable U Joints. These are just the things I have found sofar........ I love my Land Rover, but would love even more to be aloud 10 minutes alone in a room with whom ever it was that was in charge of decision making regarding a few things. Sorry...just needed to rant between swapping out all the stupidity on my truck...............back to work I go. |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
That is why I bought a DI. We searched for 9 months, I researched for 12 months, DII, P38 or DI?
DI hands down. Fewer problems and easier to repair. Doesnt look as good as the others but has fewer problems. |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
hind sight is 20 20 eh. I had a choice between a D1 and D2 and only did a bit of research....figured, "D2 must mean its better!"
DUH[:-] After I swap out a few things and some slight modifications to other things it will be a great truck and one I can trust fully on the trail.....IM still happy, but yea...prolly woulda been even more happy with a D1. Coil conversion kit arrived today.............................can't remove my tires though till I get a socket that fits :| |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
We really wanted a RRC, but with a family we wanted dual airbags and the 4.2L engine is WAY underpowered, we still might buy one as a restoration project.
We drove several P38's, DII's and finally descided on a '97. After 12 months of research I know almost everything there is to know about the LR brand. My wife says that I have a problem and that I need to look into meetings with a 12 step anti-Rover plan. |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
D2's are fine, and as for the
"ABS controlled hill decent control becuase the ABS doesn't disconnect in 4lo creating a death trap off road", you do not understand the operation of the ABS. With your CDL, you can run off road with the ABS on or off which is a great feature. |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
Sounds like you have had a streak of back luck there. I have had about 2-3 of those problems and I have 2k away from 100,000. Little things can get annoying but once you get your truck to a certain point it will become quite reliable.

RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
Yea I am still excited about this truck. Ive taken it out on some stuff that would make a Billy Goat puke already and was very impressed.
I do know about the CDL action and believe me :) It will be hooked up soon. Having your ABS kick in on a 100 yard long 45 degree decent on loose rock at 3900 feet is a shvinkter clinching experience. The Hill decent control is neat, but I have never needed it in the past with any other off road truck.....I do know a few spots with hour long decents that I would love to try it on though. Love the traction control, but the center diff lock would suit me better. Ill tough it all out and get this baby wheelin nicely in no time at all. This is a pretty much full time off road truck like my other trucks were........mostly off road, but still with highway drivability (hard balance to find) This disco 2 I now own is cheaper than the average descent ATV so Im happy with just that alone. On a happier note.....this mornin was pretty chilli up here and those heated seats were sure sweet :) Got some wrenchin ta do, but don't get me wrong........ I am still a happy disco owner. replaced the wipers with D1 wipers replacing the air suspension 2 and a smidge inches of lift on its way new winch coming (last one was destroyed after rolling 6 times) little bit of Armour needed (if your not going big then go tough) and all the little things I will deal with as I go. IM a firm believer that a good off road truck should be rigged up to handle 95% of trails......the last 5% is deap mud and crazy rock crawls......if your truck is great in that 5% than it will be garbage in the 95% I maybe whining about a few things, but I know the majority of components on this truck are incredible......crawled under my buddies G-wagon the other day and wow they were so close.....D1 would be closer I figure. The best off road trucks in the world all have offset front and rear diffs (just something i've noticed) |
RE: What the hell were they thinkin?
Also if you notice the best off road trks have nothing lower than the diff's, and they are pretty stout at that.
Full boxed frame too. And solid axles strong enough to build a bridge out of. |

I'm never getting rid of my Disco. IF we get a RRC it will be just for fun. Fix it up, drive it for a year or so and then sell it.
