Whats the possibilitey of....

Whats the possibility of my transfer case temperature sensor going bad? Is this a common problem, would bad fluid, or maybe even water ruin the sensor?

Anyway to test and see if the sensor is bad?

Just take it to a shop.

Ok, ok, that will never get old.
Water, water gets into the connector and sensor and ruins it.
Next time people need rescueing let them swim to you, or charge them.

The temperature sensor is an electronic device and all electronic devices can fail, especially on a Rover. Like Spike said water could have gotten into the connection and caused arcing. Pull the plug, clean the connection and fill it with dielectric grease before plugging it back in. Could just be a dirty connection also. I would try cleaning before spending the money for a new sender.

I have seen this post on 2 sites over the last day or so, and decided to ponder it a little this morning. Bottom line, unless someone can show me in writing that I am wrong, there is no temp sensor in our t/case.
No mention in the owners manual or warning light on the dash.
That being said, I don't think we have one. We have sensor for the chimes/neutral position and a solenoid that won't let us shift into low range if the tranny is not in neutral.

Disco Mike,

I searched the parts catalog and rave extensively for that temp sensor. As per RAVE/parts catalog... I DONT have one my 03 Discovery . There is a plug in it's place...but I do have the HARNESS for it. I plugged a DIFF LOCK switch to it and when i pushed the switch, the t-case temp light on the dash came on. I dont know why we dont... i was thinking of maybe getting it.

It also has 'F145C' written on it which when you take 145*c and convert it to *F it it approximately 293*F which is when the warning light should come on.
