Default will a ECU from a 95 discovery work on a 97 discovery?

same 3.9l engine and both are automatics...

Not at all, need one from a 97 and maybe a 98.

I thought that by then they had went with coil packs instead of the rotor and cap, so it will not work.

Actually there are 4 different engine ECU's for D1's from 96 thru 99, http://www.roverlandparts.com/discov...ne-ecus-1.aspx
so make sure you get the proper on.
