XYZ Neutral Safety Switch
 

FYI Land Rover Discovery II lovers, I found a NEW YXZ Neutral Safety switch at autozone for my 2003 Disco for less than $300. It will not show as XYZ switch, it is listed as Duralast/Neutral Safety Switch. It took me a long time to find it.

I found a used one on e-bay for $100, incorrectly listed as being compatible with my truck; when I put it in, it burned my transmission solenoid and it became a very expensive transaction for me.

You may be lucky enough to find a used one that works and is compatible, but I advise to pay the extra $100+ and have peace of mind and a full warranty :)

You guys don't know you're born ;):eek: the kosher LR OEM XYZ switch this side of the pond is circa £450 = $675. :eek: ouch!!!! that's why I refurbed mine and it works like a dream. Cost me less than £1 :)

PS I found this;

This is basically the same as I did but mine is a later less complex switch internally, externally it looks identical. Bearing in mind you have to remove this switch to replace it in any event so whilst you are doing that you may as well refurb it ............ nothing ventured nothing gained :)

Another issue, be sure to add a length of tube onto the AC drain and reroute it away from the XYZ switch as it discharges on top at present.

I never understood where the "XYZ" slang came from but it seems to me that NeutralSafety Switch's in general are expensive. My former 1999 Saab 9-5 had a faulty neutral safety switch which made it so my rear brake lights would not work. Had a hard time getting anyone to inspect the car because of it and of course the part is no longer available though if you look hard enough online you can find one for several hundred bucks. Saab enthusiasts on the forums were having a simular discussion about rebuilding their switches to! Kinda wierd that 2 completly different vehicles have the same issue and solutions...

It's more than a neutral safety switch. The transmission is electronically controlled, and the switch tells it which gear you are in. There are 4 outputs, w, x, y, and z is how they are labeled in the manual.

X1 it links akso to the transmission ECU which hooks up to the various data inputs, gear selection, engine temperature control, gearbox temperature control etc. When you read the live diagnostic data each of the gear ranges w,x,y, and z are addressed and checked for operability. Neutral registration is only one small function of the switch.
