I have owned my 94 D1 for years and have 150000 miles and have used it off road a lot and rolled it on its side and have had very minor problems. I have replaced starter altenator and the front axle has been the biggest problem. In contrast my friend bought a 2000 and had $5000 in repairs with in the first year. it was about 4-5 years old when bought. Also, the four wheel drive systems on the newer Discos are more sophisticated which means more problems more money. D1s are better off road worse on road comfort vs. the opposite of D2s.

It depends on who had the vehicle last, if they took care of it, etc. etc as you can see where im going with this. I like my Disco 1, its given me headache (P1178 code which i finaly gotten off, and it randomly deciding not to start every once in a while) but it gets me to point a to point b with no problems, and over obsticals that get in my way if they happen to fall of the back of a truck. I still gotta do some maitance on it, as i heard said on this forum before, if a person is going to get rid of a vehicle they are not going to do upkeep on it right at the end and turn it over.. well in my case the lady decided not to do up keep on it for over a year it seems (change the oil regularly and what not) thus im bring it through rehab. Ive bought mine in Nov. of 07 at 107,000 miles and now being 02/08 I have 118,000 miles and only paid 4000 grand for it. Mine is a 97 Disco SE v8i

There is going to be a wide variety of opinions on this one. Some people swear by DII's others wouldn't drive anything but a DI. It all comes down to what you want. The DI is a solid truck, its very easy to fix if you have average mechanical skills. Its great off road and will preform at its best for tons of miles if you take care of it. It has smaller taillights and less bells and whistles.
Then (starting in late 99') the DII came around. Its was a face lifted discovery I with only minor outer appearance looks. The main thing is, as said before, the taillights; the headlights are also a bit different. The body is basically the same but its is longer and wider. As for the inside, that was a different story. Almost everything was upgraded, from the floors to the seats, the dash setup, and of course tons of extra features. Some notable things are Down Hill descent, active cornering enhancement, self leveling suspension (on some) and other interior luxuries. On the engine side, engine output rose by 6 hp and torque by 18 lb-ft, compared to the prior model. Later in 03' and 04' the engine was upgraded to a 4.6.
I love my 2000. In the beginning I had a rough patch getting it rehabbed from its past owners. Which is a typical problem on all rovers. Expect to spend UP TO $1000 on its first "check up". You can usually tell if its has big problems before you buy, but somethings will come out later. For one thing, all discos look great, nothing like them. They are AMAZING of road. We have a tight community here to help, and all in all its a Land Rover! I like everything about a DII, but I have nothing against DI's at all! Its just what your price range is and what you are looking for. Good luck!
