Would this kit work with the 4.8 LS? As I understand it they are cheap and plentiful. Everyone wants a 5.3 for obvious reasons, but it seems to me that the 4.8 would prolly have more than enough power.

im not sure how much power the stock tranny can handle. I’d be interested to see how much it would cost beefing the tranny up to handle that power

You’d need to tune it to limit the torque on the tranny I suppose, but I don’t think anyon in the states does it. Tornado in England does tune the Bosch ECM.
Another video coming soon. We finished hooking up the exhaust. Cuts were needed right in front of the cats, but from the cats back it is the same as factory. Sounds basically identical to stock. |
Thanks for the answers Ace. |
Road test video is up:
In this video, the exhaust is fully welded up with cast manifolds (unlike the first video, where there was no hood and open headers). It's as quiet as stock cruising down the highway. Most of the noise you hear when idling around is the viscous fan. The untrained observer would think its unmodified. Probably the best part about this whole conversion is that it gives you options: you can make it as loud or quiet as you want, as close to factory as possible or an absolutely outrageous machine. We're getting more organized. More updates incoming. |
great Work. !! Keep us updated on this.

We've been working on an LS conversion for the Discovery 2 for the last year. All adapters were made in house and utilize the factory transmission and transfer case. We are using a stock GM LS 5.3L Vortec engine. This engine came straight from a junkyard with 120,000 miles and very few modifications. We're using a GM engine computer to run the LS, while the Bosch runs the transmission and everything else. Everything has been working very well so far. Going to do some more testing in the coming weeks.

Count me in for a kit we spoke on Facebook a week ago and I am still going to do it. My frame is sitting waiting for the transplant !

Some more updates. Things are moving right along. Still running great. It seemed to average right around 18 mpg on last highway trip on regular gas. It definitely seems like all the parts are ‘settling in’.
As things are getting further along, I’ve had some questions about a parts list. Here is a general list of what you will likely need in addition to the kit and approximate pricing. This is just for guidance purposes and subject to change. I’ll be making a detailed list with more current prices. Much of this depends on what comes with your engine and what kind of deal you can get from the junkyard. An LR4 4.8L engine can be found for very cheap (<$500 if you shop around, Craigslist). Engine Kit $1600 LS engine (Gen 3, LR4, LM7, LM4, L33; 4.8/5.3L) $700 LS wiring harness (non-emissions) $550 LS engine computer (ECU) flashed to our specifications $200 Low profile oil pan $200 Exhaust manifolds or headers $200+ Heater hoses and assorted coolant hoses $100 O2 Sensors (front) $60 Spark Plugs $55 Intake Piping $100 Various Other Sensors $200 Miscellaneous hoses, oil, coolant $200 Total $4165+ Emissions harness +$250 Emissions sensors +$200 Harness rewire option +$350 |
AC, did you retain the AFM system in your swap?

That actually makes me happy. I just went through the pain of deleting the AFM on my Silverado. Thanks
