This will work with any 3rd generation LS truck 4.8 and 5.3 as long as it has the crank flange that is flush to the block (some early 4.8s had the long flange that sticks out a little bit). I mainly went with the 5.3 because I found one that was an aluminum block which makes it only about 50 pounds heavier than the Rover V8. 4.8 would be a great budget option a lot of junkyards are basically giving them away. 4.8 would be a nice pairing to the 4HP22, which has a lower torque rating.

im not sure how much power the stock tranny can handle. I’d be interested to see how much it would cost beefing the tranny up to handle that power

The 4HP24 rated at 450 Nm, which is about 335 ft-lbs, which is right at what this 5.3 is rated at. I'm sure you could push it a bit more. The 4HP24s on the Dinan 850i twin turbos had extra cooling and a bigger converter. The 4HP22's rating is a bit less.

You’d need to tune it to limit the torque on the tranny I suppose, but I don’t think anyon in the states does it. Tornado in England does tune the Bosch ECM.

You could also limit the torque output from the engine in the GM ECM programming easily.

Another video coming soon. We finished hooking up the exhaust. Cuts were needed right in front of the cats, but from the cats back it is the same as factory. Sounds basically identical to stock.

Thanks for the answers Ace.

Road test video is up:

In this video, the exhaust is fully welded up with cast manifolds (unlike the first video, where there was no hood and open headers). It's as quiet as stock cruising down the highway. Most of the noise you hear when idling around is the viscous fan. The untrained observer would think its unmodified.

Probably the best part about this whole conversion is that it gives you options: you can make it as loud or quiet as you want, as close to factory as possible or an absolutely outrageous machine.

We're getting more organized. More updates incoming.

great Work. !! Keep us updated on this.

We are using a stock GM LS 5.3L Vortec engine. This engine came straight from a junkyard with 120,000 miles and very few modifications. We're using a GM engine computer to run the LS, while the Bosch runs the transmission and everything else. Everything has been working very well so far. Going to do some more testing in the coming weeks.

Congrats, nice job

Count me in for a kit we spoke on Facebook a week ago and I am still going to do it. My frame is sitting waiting for the transplant !

Some more updates. Things are moving right along. Still running great. It seemed to average right around 18 mpg on last highway trip on regular gas. It definitely seems like all the parts are ‘settling in’.

As things are getting further along, I’ve had some questions about a parts list. Here is a general list of what you will likely need in addition to the kit and approximate pricing. This is just for guidance purposes and subject to change. I’ll be making a detailed list with more current prices. Much of this depends on what comes with your engine and what kind of deal you can get from the junkyard. An LR4 4.8L engine can be found for very cheap (<$500 if you shop around, Craigslist).

Engine Kit $1600
LS engine (Gen 3, LR4, LM7, LM4, L33; 4.8/5.3L) $700
LS wiring harness (non-emissions) $550
LS engine computer (ECU) flashed to our specifications $200
Low profile oil pan $200
Exhaust manifolds or headers $200+
Heater hoses and assorted coolant hoses $100
O2 Sensors (front) $60
Spark Plugs $55
Intake Piping $100
Various Other Sensors $200
Miscellaneous hoses, oil, coolant $200

Total $4165+

Emissions harness +$250
Emissions sensors +$200
Harness rewire option +$350

AC, did you retain the AFM system in your swap?

The AFM / Displacement on Demand was a feature of the Gen IV LS engines. This is a Gen III engine. AFM could probably be implemented on a Gen IV engine with this swap. Gen IV/V would add a lot of complexity though and makes the cost go up substantially, so that's why were focusing on Gen III. We're looking at Gen IV/V as down-the-road options.

That actually makes me happy. I just went through the pain of deleting the AFM on my Silverado. Thanks
