07 HSE trans complete fail

Stopped at traffic light last week, light changed, pressed accelerator and heard a loud whining sound. RR didn't move. Towed to shop; main shaft and transfer case where shaft enters, badly rusted. Mechanic says looks defective; need new transmission and transfer case, total cost for repair $8,500. One year and 20,000 past 50,000 drive train warranty. Anybody heard of similar instances or have suggestions as to how the shaft might have become so rusted / ruined? Any recourse with the dealer or manufacturer?

i have seen issues with the trans cooler going bad and getting coolant into the transmission but that causes a shuddering before it dies.

you probably had a bad install or bad seal with water intrusion.

Thanks very much. Any other advice anyone has would be much appreciated as well.

Get a hold of Rover. That shouldn't be happening so soon, obviously. Someone must pay...

Range Rover NA told me to get lost. Very abrasive NJ woman.

Update: 3 weeks and zero response from local dealership, Land Rover Birmingham

Eniam17 12-15-2011 07:20 PM

Did you buy it from that dealership or are you just checking with them?
Have you tried going to directly to LR and not through a dealer?

WilsonD 12-16-2011 08:14 AM

Yes, bought it from the local dealership. They have not acknowledged or responded to either of my two detailed letters. Land Rover NA in New Jersey responded with a caustic, boilerplate denial of any responsibility. I then contacted Jaguar Landrover in England; they replied immediately and promise to research and respond quickly.

Well you are over the warrantee. if you were a great client and had all your services performed there then they will try and help but nothing from the dealer and they won't do anything to help you. They will leave it in the hands of rover. If Rover says no then so be it. Remember they don't have to cover anything over the warrantee. if it happens to alot of souls they will do something but if not then its consider a fluke and won't do anything. Plus if the vehicle had been taken to a LR shop they would be willing to help you with diag or a visit from an engineer. But at anther shop they are not obligated to help you.
