2006 vs. 2008
Hi to all, long time lurker about to take the plunge! I have tried to search and read so as to avoid the same newbie questions and apologize if I come close to doing so!
I am trying to choose between a low milage 2006 RR (18,000 miles) and a higher mileage 2008/09 (33Kmiles +-). I believe that the 2006 was the first year w/new model engines and that is not a good thing generally speaking - stay away from 1st year of anything new is a good rule of thumb! I also read "go with the latest model year you can afford". Is that true in this case? Any particular reasons I should go to or shy from one or the other? All things equal, the 2006 w/ a good extended warrantee ok to look at? I appreciate any and all comments and again, apologies for the newbie-ness of this! |
2006 model years were good trucks... you are right, they are the first of the "Jag" engines, 4.2L Supercharged and 4.4 normally aspirated. At this point, 2007+ is holding their value better than the 2006 as they made some significant changes throughout the vehicle--both inside and outside. They are not very apparent unless you put the two next to each other. I would vote for a slightly higher mileaged 2007 truck if you'd like to keep the cost down. Maybe 25,000 - 30,000 miles.

Thanks! Moving up to the next years, '07, '08 and '09, any changes in there to note? From what I read they are pretty comparible and differences not too noteworthy. I haven't noticed any repair issues centered on one year over another in that group. Just seems to be a difference in mileage and the associated cost to purchase given less/more mileage. I must say that I really liked that 2006 and the mileage was tempting. just leary of so few miles on a 2006..if that makes sense. I know it could have been sitting in a garage for that time but that could be a good or a bad thing.

Yes, Range Rovers shouldn't be sitting in a garage for too long, lol. They need to be driven. Someone with more specific knowledge may be able to discern the differences between '07, '08 & '09, but as far as I know they are pretty much identical. They changed the icons on the infotainment screen from words to icons in mid-'07 and wheels changed in 2009. Also, some 'only supercharged' options became available on the HSE in '08 (I think). Someone else will have more to add.

Were there mechanical changes/upgrades to the '07 and beyond years specifically due to issues found in the 2006? I can't find anything in here referencing it if there were. Just some general comments about "stay away from 1st year" but nothing specific.

There were computer upgrades and suspension tweaks for '07+, also 2007 saw the introduction of the Terrain Response system and an electronic parking brake in the big Rovers; this was a fairly significant upgrade from the 2006 model year and is probably why their holding their value fairly well. I am not aware of any specific mechanical changes from '06 - '07

Thanks. I do notice a relatively significant drop in price from '07 to '06. I guess those are the reasons. I have to say that I fell in love with the 2006 I saw. In the normal world it is probably a good policy to stay away from buying vehicles based on "love" but if you are one who doesn't fall in love with a car you shouldn't be looking at RR in the first place. I am just trying to stay away from learning what a bad buy it was AFTER I make the purchase. "Had I only known the '07 was so much better......"
