Engine quit while running
 

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and I have 2005 Range Rover 4.4 V8 with a BMW engine. Last night I was driving, cruise control on and all of a sudden the engine quit on me. Had to pull over and the car with start again, come to idle and quit again....

Any ideas?

Crank Shaft Position Sensor. May crank when cold. When warmed up may fail, or it turned off fail to re-crank. Litmus test is a spare spark plug attached to existing plug wire and laid on manifold. Watch for sparks when cranking. Note: it is considered bad form to allow SWMBO to hold the plug while testing.

Btw, now when I try to crank it, it just keeps cranking by itself for a while until I switch the key back to off. Still sounds like the same problem Savannah Buzz?

Check for spark....

Ok, update, CKP replaced but engine still won't start. According to the RAVE manual, resets have to be performed...

Any more insight?

It is my understanding that the "reset" is needed for accurate misfire diagnostics and shouldn't prevent the vehicle from starting.

Like Savannah Buzz asked, do you have spark????

I haven't checked after I installed the CKP. I'm away for 48h on abusiness trip so I'll keep yo uposted once I get back.

I dont think your gonna check the spark as the 05 has coil on plug so there are not any plug wires.

BUT you could open the centers of the head covers and inspect for oil puddles this can short the plugs out and possible kill the engine.

From the info posted i am guessing that the fuel pump has failed the simple test is to plug a gauge onto the fuel rail

Problem solved. Clogged fuel filter and a burned out fuel pump....

Need to change that filter more often so you don't burn out those expensive fuel pumps.
