High Idle, 98 Range Rover 90K Miles
 

Hey Guys,
I recently purchased a 98 RR, it has 90K miles and all of the dealer services have been done. Before I purchased it they replaced the lower rear intake seal, head gaskets and oil pan seal, as well as new belts, some hoses and a ton of misc. small things. I've noticed that it idles a little high. I'm new to the brand so I thought I'd ask and see where it should be.

When I start the truck, it runs a little high, which is to be expected, then drops down to about 900-1K. After you run it at highway speeds for about 30 min it seems to sit just under 2K for a little while, but will eventually come down to 1K.

Do they normally run that high, or is there something I should look into?

I'm perfectly comfortable working on cars (I have a full size Bronco that seems to need a major repair every other day) but I don't know my way around this motor yet (I've only had the truck about 5 days).

You are idling high. Should idle around 1K ± .1.

High idling can be caused by a wide number of things. Unless you noticed it idling high before the dealer did the work you may have to check quite a few things.

Could be the sensor under the starter doesn't have a good connection. I can't really recall what it is (air temp sensors maybe?) other then it's under the alternator and has two wires running. Would also check the TPS and MAF as these are pretty common culprits.

Do you have a copy of the RAVE manual yet? It should help you familiarise yourself with the vehicle.

I do have a copy of the RAVE manual. I've spent a little time since my last post checking it out. I pulled and cleaned the stepper motor and that did the trick.
