New Brake Squeak
 

Last weekend I purchased a used 2006 Range Rover Sport (my first Land Rover). I took it home and noticed the brakes squeak badly. I had a Firestone place look at it since it was a Sunday and they said I had new brake pads on all four wheels. They noticed some light rust since the vehicle had been sitting around for awhile and suggested if I drive it awhile the squeak may go away. After about 400 miles (mainly highway) I still have a squeak.

Anyone have any idea why new brake pads would squeak? Is this something common on Range Rovers? Should I have the dealer check the brakes?

Just a shot in the dark, but the previous owner put crap brakes on it.... Have you had the brakes thoroughly cleaned with brake cleaner?

I took my Range Rover into the dealership and they too said I had brand new brakes pads. They suggested that factory pads are typically softer than normal in order to stop the heavy Ranger Rover without the squeak.

Any suggestions on a good aftermarket brake pad?

Mine did the same thing. You'll just have to do a lot of CITY driving. It'll eventually go away. It takes a while. Maybe 2 months. You can waste money on new brakes if you'd like, but I'd save that money for coil over shocks to replace the air suspension that'll eventually go out, or the tow for when your anti theft kicks in unexpectedly. Many people will tell you it won't happen, but that's only because it hasn't happened to them yet. ;)

A lot of pads have a "break in" layer that will recondition the rotors. Mine did and it squeaked like crazy for awhile. Eventually all was well and the old rotors looked new!
