P38 fuel pump access?
 

i'm having a no start issue on my '97 4.0 and i need to test my fuel pump to see if it needs replacement and to check to see the bottom of the tank to see if its full of sediment. i've only had my rover for about a week now so i haven't dug into it much yet, but is there an access panel to get to the pump without dropping the tank?

i've been searching most of the day and i've seen conflicting reports -- some have said there is an access panel, others say the tank needs to be dropped, others have cut a hole in the floor.

so for P38 owners, what do i need to do?

There is a valve stem on the fuel rail. You can put a tire pressure gauge on it to see what kind of force your pump is putting out.

You know I have never looked at the Range to see if there was an access hole. I know on my Disco's there is one and it makes it very easy to work with.

There would have to be some serious sediment for it not to work or unless the pump is so clogged it is not pumping. Do as Scott said and check it at the rail first. After that if you need to look at it then look for the access panel. You may have a clogged fuel filter as well that is causing your issue. That is located on the passenger side towards the rear on the frame rail and is an easy thing to replace.

You should be able to hear the pump turn on when you turn the key on. It would be easier with two people so you can hear over all of the beeps that come on at the same time. I disconnected the seatbelt beeper on mine, and can always hear the fuel pump prime when I turn the key on.

tested the fuel pressure today with only 20-22 psi.

after running so well after i put gas in it, i'm going to suspect the fuel filters are now clogged. i have some new ones already so once it warms up a little outside i'm going to get them changed out. also purchased new plugs, PVC system hoses, thermostat and fuel injector cleaner. see if that does the trick to bring this thing back to life without choking to death.

Just checked mine, it was between 23 and 31 PSI. Multiple readings are the most accurate. Take an average of them all. The fuel filters are cheap and easy to replace. I would start with them like you said. Now I have to figure out how to get the smell of fuel off my hands before I go to bed...
