Speed sensor A? Which one?

I have a code now that I can't clear, it says P0500(speed sensor A). Which speed sensor is it?

Fun.

From RAVE:

Speed Input
Terminal 11 of the Cruise Control ECU (Z121)
receives the Vehicle Speed output signal from the
BeCM (Z238) through the Y or YR wire. The BeCM
(Z238) receives the vehicle speed signal from the
Anti–lock Brake System ECU (Z108). The signal is a
pulsing voltage and its frequency changes with

vehicle speed.

So that tells us the ABS produces the speed signal.

From the antilock brake system pages:

Wheel Speed Sensors (X137, X140, X158, X161)
A wheel speed sensor is located at each wheel. The
speed sensors generate an AC voltage signal as a
toothed ring rotates past the stationary sensor
pickup. The Anti–Lock Brake System ECU (Z108)
calculates the wheel speed by measuring the
frequency of the AC voltage signal generated by the

sensors.

I have attached the wiring diagram. A quick check of the RAVE, and I did not find wheels specified as A, B, C, etc. Just Left Front, etc.

So perhaps your code reader is make a guess of location? I think it may refer to any speed sensor.

Cool thanks for the diagram. So is the bcm under the passenger seat? I did find a yellow/red and a red/yellow wire wrapped in tape and hanging out of a maybe 20 pin yellow connector.

The connector is plugged in directly under the passenger seat fuse box. The two stray wires still have the terminals still intact but the yellow connector they belong in has 3 empty cavities so I need to know which wire goes to which empty cavity.

BECM and ABS are two separate modules, BECM under seat, other under dash. See attached pix. You might want to download the RAVE shop manual set, it has electrical diagrams, location photos, connector layouts. I saw a yellow / red wire listed as from pin 20 of connector C255 of the BECM, heads toward cruise control.

I figured it out, I used to have the big push bar and fog lights. I removed them and the wiring for the relays. The two wires not connected go to that connector and are for the factory fog light switch.

Hi, I have the same code (P0500) on my Range Rover 1999. I was wondering if you could shed some light on what could be the possble cause of this code. I'm kinda new to this.

Code: P0500
Speedometer: Not Working (Replaced it,could not be problem)
Vehicle Speed Sensor: Replaced, Still showing code and no speedometer

When connect to OBD reader(computer), code P0500 shows up. Check to see rpm and vehicle speed (mph) on OBD reader. Shows RPMs but vehicle speed remains at 0mph while moving. So, I'm thinking the ECU is not receiving the signal (pulses) from VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).

I'm lost.......what else could be faulty? A wire?, if so were could be a first place to start checking for a bad wire? Do any fuses have part in this or relay?

It could be a bad VSS? My problem was that for a short ride home I had different size tires on the rear. I installed the right size tires the next day but couldn't clear the light for code p0500.

It finally cleared on it's own after a few days of driving back and forth to work. My speedo worked though?
