RE: what does P38 mean

The second-generation Range Rover from 1995-2002 also had the project designation 38A, like the current shape Range Rover (2003-curent) is an L322. The term "P38" or "P38A" was not actually ever a real Land Rover factory designation but has come about in error because people have shortened Project 38A to that. If your're trying to talk Rover-speak, then P38 just refers to the second-generation Range Rover, however if you want to be more precise and obsessive-compulsive you will use "38A";)

Because of the three different generations of Range Rover, the generally accepted way to refer to them to avoid confusion is a "Classic" for the original body style up to 1995, "38A" for 1995-2002, and "New Shape" for the current. When a fourth-generation style comes out we'll have to think up something else for the "new shape"!
