Wait a minute. You had a head-gasket job and a long list of other stuff fixed at a dealer in Manhattan, and they charged $5k? It's completely fair to ask them to solve the problems that are persisting if they're related to the work they did, but the bill is not necessarily outrageous as I understand it. Just the head-gasket job alone is often $2500 at independent shops with median labor rates. Then add up all the other jobs on the transmission, ignition, oil etc. You took it to a dealer, and one in Manhattan? That doesn't sound like the action of someone who's concerned about costs.
I can understand you'd be bothered about it not coming back working right, but honestly, these Land Rovers can fake out the best of us. Just read some threads. I would suggest asking for more help to resolve the issues instead of complaining about the cost.
The problem here seems to be that you've made a bad choice of vehicle for your needs and some bad choices about how to have it serviced. If you don't work on your own vehicle, and you don't want to pay high maintenance costs, a Land Rover is the wrong way to go, especially an older one. I suggest cutting your losses soon or you'll get burned more. Most of the people here are the ones who bought these things from people like yourself because we're happy to spend a lot of time with a temperamental vehicle that screws with us. We have a good sense of humour about it and do the work ourselves. None of us expect you to be like that. Nobody else in my own family is. We're different, and questionably sane. Get yourself something nice like a Volvo XC-90.

That's what I thought also. Would have sent her up to British Auto Works in the Bronx to get an honest opinion, but I know nil about Rover specialists in the Metro Capital area.

I wish I would have known you before I bought it to know exactly what needed to be done or if it was worth purchasing. It ran great and only has highway miles on it!!!
