if the engine isn't disabled when it happens then look at a sticking relay for the starter motor. swap it with the abs light. if it still happens then its possible the starter or the perhaps the xyz switch is causing the intermittent issue. but at the same time too if its not the relay and its intermittent you could have an issue with the bcu getting the signal and not grounding the relay. if it happens alot take it to a shop with a testbook so they can see what the modules are seeing at the time of the problem. Then you will know what is going on and can diagnose the vehicle.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I actually managed to get the issue sorted and was something pretty simple in the end, see my previous post for details. Just wanted to update the thread and close it off as problem solved.
