Basic Wheel Bearing Info
 

So, I've been on YouTube and various forums pertaining to replacing worn wheel bearings. As I know I'll need to perform this as a basic maintenance task, what's the basic method of it?

So, from what I've gathered;

Ultimately it's a simple exchange task. You remove all necessary components, take out the old bearings and simply install the new ones in reverse as you took them off. BUT, if they've welded themselves inside you must apply force to the old ones and force them out, clean out all the leftover garbage and replace them.

And you need new bearing, locking bushings, and gobs of grease;correct? What kind of grease?

As I said, i'm not in this situation yet but intend on performing this task with my 60k service. Do I have the fundamentals right? Also, I figured another thread about this "common" problem wouldn't hurt anyone

At your mileage you should buy the complete wheel bearing set with seals from Atlantic British. You will also need the best wheel bearing grease you can find. You will also need to service the swivel balls and reset them along with changing the diff oil.
Might want to follow the directions in my major service list at the top of the D1 section.

its the races that are a pain and have to be knocked out and new races driven in.

but if they are not showing signs of wear then clean them out and install new grease and a seal if you take off the rotor.

The races aren't really a pain, all you need is a bearing punch and a 2lb or so hammer.

Have you read the shop manual? it's covered step by step in there.
Under no circumstances install a new cone (the part with the roller bearings) in a old cup (the outer race).

If you off-road use the RTC3511 hub seal, it's a better seal.
I wouldn't get the kit from AB, or anyone else probably. You'll be paying a premium for bearings that you can get for $10-$15 each at your local autoparts store plus you'll be getting a crappy hub seal.
The bearings are: Timken SET37, SKF BR37, FAG KIT38 or National A-37

There are a lot of threads about replacing the hub bearings.

I think you mean a new cone in an old cup.
