Bearmach HawkEye or Blackbox-Solutions Faultmate MSV-2?

Which do you use, or would use if you had to choose. I live $1200.00 from the closest city with a Dealership. Add on the cost of resetting the ecu, $100, that puts a reset at $1300 minimum. That doesn't count my food and lodging for the 6 days of travel. Plus, if the reset doesn't fix the Disco, or another reset is required for whatever reason, it's another $1500+ trip to the dealer. So I ask again, which would you recomend and why? The Blackbox Solutions Faultmate MSV-2 will cost about $950 before shipping with all of the hardware, adapters and software for my vehicle. The BearMach HawkEye will cost $900 before shipping with the hardware, adapters and software for my vehicle. Both would allow me to check all Disco I series vehicles, not just my VIN.

What do you think a Hawkeye will do for your 96 that a good high end $150 can't do?

Reset the ECU. So I don't have to make a trip to the dealership. I can read and clear codes all day long, look at freeze frame data and real time data, but I cannot reset the ECU to fix a high idle after I replace my TPS or IACV.

Need to replace brakes on 2008 RR Sport. Roter are good, was told I have to replace them everytime I replace brakes...it that true?

dude, the vehicle isn't worth the money. trust me you can get away with a simple one to reset the cel light and ignore the others.

And to the to the other poster yes, we recommend replacing rotors. most of the time its either rust or they are so dished that they will cause lots of noise and pulsations.

blackbox solutions I haven't used but the hawkeye I used on newer ones and it worked.

Maybe you didn't understand me...

I HAVE a scan tool. A scan tool WILL NOT reset the parameters of the IACV or the TPS. That is what I want to do. Not clear a CEL that never comes on. I need to fix my high idle and cannot go to the dealership to do so. And I am not going to just start replacing parts and the ecu to make the vehicle idle correctly. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then keep your thoughts to yourself. But if you have experience with the HawkEye or Faultmate, then please give me your input. I am looking for a Testbook alternative for my vehicle.

you can do a hawkeye, not sure if you can reset the tps on it though. Our testbook handheld does not but then again we don't have the full package on it.

Anyone have the HawkEye or Faultmate?

Page 46 in the RAVE.
Idle speed - controlled by GEMS system

all loads off ................................ 700 ± 20 rev/min

Base idle speed....................... Not adjustable

Idle air control valve position, checked via
TestBook

Both the HawkEye and Faultmate claim to be able to reset the base idle speed. Can anyone confirm this claim? Or am I gonna just have to bite the bullet and find out for myself...

I see this is a very old post... but I’m having the same issue!
Did you ever get an answer, is there a consumer grade tool the will reset ECU values (like idle)??
thanks!

As part of my purchase of a '99 D2 (with a completely rebuilt 4.0), I now have a Nanocom Faultmate (and cables) for that vehicle. If it's true that setup has no way to connect to a MacBook, I'm of the mind to put mine up for sale. (I do need to do a bit more homework though, to find out if the Nanocom unit is VIN-specific? Or is it just model-specific, working only on 1999 to 2002 D2's?). I already have the Hawkeye.... and to my experience it cannot reset the base idle speed. (Not on a D2 at least.)

Hope this is of some help, GA D90!
