D1 Dash lights

This is difficult to articulate but I will try to be clear and concise. When I rotate the switch on the light stalk to turn on the headlights the dash lights (Speedo tach ...) turn off and the gear selector also turns off. The selector has two positions the first position must turn them both on and the second click is for the headlights I guess. Thank you, this popped up once before but by morning it fixed itself. This came up last night on my way home from picking up the parts for a rotor and pad front brake job, front wheel bearing replacement, alternator swap, ball joint replacement. So add one more to the list. Thank you all.

Typically what you describe is a symptom of the turn signal/headlight stalk going bad. They are getting a little pricey here in the U.S.
$130 at AB... https://www.roverparts.com/Parts/STC4017

Much cheaper across the pond. I've had good experience with LRDIRECT... even with shipping you'll be way ahead of the game. Likely to be $65-70 all in.

.... also, if you post in the "D1" section you'll get more eyeballs and a better chance at answers/help.

I have another 98 with a lot more miles on it, should I try that one before purchasing a new one? Or is it likely to be on its way out as well?

You don't have much to lose by trying. Removal and replacement is a matter of unscrewing the black plastic piece below the steering wheel and turn the wheel 90 deg left. That should expose two screws holding the base of the stalk in place. At that point it should slide right out.

Look for burnt connectors and clean up any that look browned on both the connector and the base of the stalk. A little dielectric grease is also helpful.

Dash Lights

Well it’s been a while since I posted that about my Dash lights, I needed to do more research on that so I took the hood and drivers fender off the black one and cleaned sanded bodywork paint and cleared them and got them jnstallolasr night. So I started at 6:30 pm and walked into the house from the garage at 4:30 am! I took the indicator stalk out of the other D1 as well as most of the dash electronics, the Gear selector plastic deal with the two lights in it, and the window, seat heater and sunroof switches So I wanted to replace the selector part and the indicator stalk and If I didn’t find something obvious quick put it all back together as to keep wife happy. I replaced a couple burned out bulbs and still nothing so I cleaned everything up and put it all back together correctly and the last thing I did was roll up the windows, I have had an issue with passenger back window switch a while back, it worked when I tested them all but not now. So I cleaned up another switch installed it and Bam, no sh*t everything works. Not one bulb needs replaced not one dash warning light no nothing. Except
