D2 Front Cover Gasket - Sealant?
Hello All,
I have been a lurker of the site for a while and it has been a huge help. Just replaced my heater core a few months ago with no issues thanks to the forum. With the help of the HF Coolant Pressure Test Kit I am now tackling a coolant leak (notorious fail spot on the top right of the front cover) and was curious if I should use sealant on one or both sides of the AB front cover gasket I ordered. The gasket itself is green, and has a small black line running in the middle of one side (black line is heat activated sealant?) I was thinking I would apply a thin layer of Right Stuff Grey on the smooth side of the gasket, and leave the black line side alone. However, I do not want to do this job again so I hesitate about putting a thin layer on both sides. Also I will be replacing: 1.) Water Pump 2.) Timing chain/gears 3.) Thermostat and expansion tank cap 4.) Oil pump gears 5.) All related seals and gaskets (oil pan, front main, o-rings, water pump, etc) My truck is a 2000 D2 with 140K miles, Niagra Grey, bone stock.... Thanks in advance for the wisdom |
Definitely watching this post! I am considering doing all of the same items.

Hola
For this application I use a shellac based sealant like Apache from your local parts store. I will only use Hylomar is the faces are marred by minor impact/pry damage, corrosion etc. T/V |
