Head Gasket

I have a 2004 LR Discovery II and it has a blown head gasket. I always check my fluids and have never known the vehicle to ever be running hot.
I was told by the dealership that it could need a short block engine due to dropped cylinder liner (which they say would add about $5,500 to the quote listed below!)
The labor for head gaskets is about $2500, and parts required can range from a few hundred to over $1200 if it needs all bolts replaced (common) and some machine shop work about $300. The worst-case head gasket scenario of about $4000. I live here in the bay area and cannot afford any more than $4000.
Anyone have some help on how to get this car fixed so that it can continue to drive? Thank you.

If you are not doing the work yourself the costs can quickly exceed the value of the vehicle. Slipped sleeves can be 'pinned' or new 'top hat' sleeves can be installed, but it is a big job (expensive). They aren't difficult to work on, but it does take 12-15 hours of shop time to do a head gasket job.

Sorry to deliver the bad news but your situation is, unfortunately, not unique.
