Limp mode (M + S lights), P1884

I brought my 2000 discovery 2 to the shop for a water leak. They found a broke engine mount, etc. They finished the work, picked it up and half way home i noticed the MS llights flashing I do not know if they were flashing from the start or not (they fall between my eyes and the steering wheel). So, I inform them of the situation, and he ask me to disconnect the battery and a couple of fuses. So, I say how about I bring it back in and you take care of the situation...To make a long story short, I retrieved the vehicle and will recoupe my funds from the shop by other means.

I have had these lights before, but they were hit and miss until I found that it was the battery terminals. Now the lights flash as soon as the engine cranks. Another thing that wasn't present before i brought it to them is the fact that when i cold start the engine, it idles really high and then gradually goes down to about 750....if i put it in neutral it dips even lower. Put it back in drive it stays low.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

The M+S switch on the side of the gearbox is a well known problem, as is the harness rubbing at the P clip on top of the box causing a short

Have a look at the link above which explains the switch

if it is a V8, is it shifting or just staying in 3rd gears?

Hey guys is this the one? The seller is saying tan ones are supposedly only for 99-02? And black for 03-04. I have a 03 Land Rover Discovery II HSE7. And this is my last final part to try and fix limp mode issues. He’s saying might should put whatever color is on it bc the trans ECU might require it? Can I use this one or no?

XYZ switches are 99-04 = same thing. The brown unit cost more vs the newer black unit's. I've personally had better luck with the brown/tan units vs the newer style black ones. Either unit will work on 99-04 D2's.

Once you replace it make sure it's adjusted good or you could still get M&S flashing. Also for peace of mind get a meter and check the voltage of your batter with the engine off and on. Off you should be 12.1-12.9 and running it should be 13.4-14.4 depending on the electrical load.

Ok thank you. I honestly have no idea if mine is even bad, but the one on mine now is tan and I did buy the one on eBay at $85 which is a good deal compared to the others I’ve seen.

and master brake cylinder~ you was on my post about that so maybe you can help me. I replaced it. Followed all steps as stated but I’m still getting a spongey feeling 😫 what could it possibly be? Could it be something else? It’s like if I pump them while I test drove after replacing they will start to feel normal again (tight brake reg feel) but then they will go right back to that spongey feeling again, I mean they work and do feel better than prior but I just know that spongey go to the floor feeling should not be there

You need to either activate the ABS modulator to get the air to pass thru it and then bleed all 4 corners, or go have it bled somewhere they can activate the modulator as they bleed it.
