noise underneath
I am looking at a 2004 Discovery SE. When I am doing like 25 mph and I release the gas pedal and hit it again there is a loud thud under the truck. This continues for as long as I keep doing this. Is this a tranny or axle. Is this normal by any chance?

RE: noise underneath
Stop driving it and if you are mechanical enough, get under and check it out, otherwise call your mechanic on Monday.
Sounds like a u-joint, if so, could be the double cardon. STOP driving it. |
RE: noise underneath
it sounds like its normal. the transfer case is completely gear driven, and loading/ unloading the drivetrain will cause a clunk in the gears. as long as it is a deep pitched somewhat heavy clunk, its fine. if it sounds more hollow and metalic, it might be the u-joints in your hookes joint, as mentioned above. however those u-joints starting to fail will always cause a strong body vibration under accel at about 30 mph. RE: noise underneath
Rovers are known for a small noise, but if this is something new, check and replace your u-joints with special attention to the two on the front shaft where it attaches to the t/case.

RE: noise underneath
if you go the route of replacing the u-joints, be very careful of the center piviot bearing inside the hookes joint (double u-joint) it can be very hard to set this back up right, ive seen several seasoned techs have cars come back a week later and need a whole prop shaft cus it wasnt right.
