Noob input very welcome

Picking up my first entry into LR, '03 Discovery S. Any input, advice, or suggestions on keeping this vehicle running smooth is much obliged. I typically run only the highest grade fuels and synthetic oils in all my vehicles and care for them sometimes as though they share my DNA. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome. Shop manual set is called the RAVE, a free download link below.

1. Front drive shaft will have a double end, oem had no grease fittings, when they dry out, it snaps and bashes a hole in transmission. Rebuild shaft in advance or replace, and grease every oil change.

2. Temp gauge always points at 50% until above 240F. Use a scanner, Ultra Gauge, or smart phone app to see real temps. There is a 180F thermostat that many have upgraded to, but only buy the real Rover one, the Motorad versions are not as reliable.

3. A diesel rated oil is suggested, like Shell Rotella 5W40 syn. Any W30 is too light weight above 95 for these motors (1962 Buick design). The diesel rated oils have higher addives that help old style push rod overhead valve engines, and the "soot control" formulation helps keep crud in suspension so filter can trap it. 3-5K drain interval, forget the 7500 - 15,000. Even though you run high quality oil and filter, old design engine is still producing more dirt than new design engines.

4. Change all the fluids. Eliminate any Dexcool from the cooling system. 50/50 premix green is better, the Dexcool turns to mud inside the radiator.

Thank you Savannah and Disco Mike, I appreciate everything, I'm contacting my main mechanic who does European only and get him moving on the front drive shaft ASAP before winter hits around the Northeast. Disco I will follow your service suggestions to a T.
