oil changes on LR3

My husband is planning to do the oil changes on our new LR3. It looks a little tricky because of the skid plate. He's accustomed to the oil filter being more accessable in other cars we've had. Does anyone have any experience changing their own oil and some advice based on your experience? Thanks so much.

hey lisa, let your hubby do it, the skid plate really aint that heavy and after the first time he takes it off he will know exactly how to do it, is not a huge deal at all

not a tech. problem. it is simple, find the bolts and take off, do change, put on. the best reason for him to do it, is to get to know the vehicle, how it looks, do the inspections, and maintainence. When you know what right looks like it is easier to identify wrong when you see it. It may not be easier to fix. The other thing I get on a soap box is maintenance. keep it right at all times. all of it. fix problems as they happen. often a small problem fixed will prevent a large one from occuring. gotta love a rover. duboff

I'm sure by now your husband has found there is an access cover to get to the filter, unfortunately it does not line up properly and so when he loosens the filter it will make a darn mess unless he puts in a cardboard guide, otherwise off with the whole cover!

also make sure he gets some new drain plugs. they should not be reused.

Thanks for the input, folks. I did the oil change. Took both skid plates off. Not a big deal. Picked up the filter and drain plug at the dealer, who also told me that I would need the new plug, as one of you stated. However, when I looked at the plug, I noticed that it's just a plain old plug with a rubber gasket, not one with the copper "crush" washer, as older models apparently had. My 2005 LR3 does not use drain plugs with copper washers. I pointed this out to the dealer, who agreed that the washer really doesn't need to be replaced with each oil change. I will continue to do the oil changes myself and only change that plug as needed, which, frankly, shouldn't be too often.
