Pesky vibration from 40-70 mph! Help!
 

I have an '03 Disco with about 129k on it. It has a vibration issue where the whole vehicle shakes from around 40 mph to very noticeable at 65 mph. It still drives and has been like this for a bit. The tires have been balanced and aligned. The rear flex joint has been replaced and my LR mechanic tells me he doesn't see anything wrong with the front shaft (ie - no play, no rust...etc). Any ideas????

Check the driveshafts (propshafts) to ensure the balance weights haven't broken off as they are only spot welded in place. Also check the engine mounts, shock absorbers and the steering damper. Also check the obvious, large stones trapped in you tire tread. Also worth checking the steering ball joints for play. The problem with Landrovers they can pick up vibrations from anywhere (like magic) and you don't notice them intil you are driving on a super smooth motorway at certain speeds. :confused:

I would start by Inspecting all four steering rod ends for play. Check the Drag link and track rod ends.

Next, inspect your panhard rod bushings. Inspect the bolts that secures the panhard rod to the frame/diff. If the bushes are worn or the bolts securing the rod are loose the truck will shake like a porn star shooting a squirting scene. Too much?!

Start there and report back.

So the front shaft is fine. Balance weight is still there and the shaft itself is balanced. The vibration feels drive line and all the parts associated with steering appear to be fine. Only thing we noticed was there was some "slop" in t-case. Drain the fluid and found no indications of metal.

Back to square one with this vibration....

might also be worth checking the output flange, for movement. one nut in there.
does your front shaft have 5 grease nipples/zerks?
