Reverse Quit on RR Classic; Help!
1991 Range Rover 180,000 miles
Symptopms: The transmission slips when in reverse. The truck will roll backward at idle in reverse but if I’m on rough roads or backing up hill the engine will rev up without a noticeable increase in reverse speed. When I try to back up on dirt up hill the whole truck shakes.
Any Ideas?
Trans History: From the time I bought this truck two years ago I’ve always had the following trans issue. When cold the truck will not shift out of 1st gear. I have to wait for the truck to warm up or drive about 2 miles before it shifts normally. When it is Really cold the truck will not react to being shifted into Drive or Reverse gear for about 30 seconds after start up.
Maintance: Less than 6ooo miles ago I replaced the Trans Filter and fluid in an attempt to remedy the cold shifting problem. It didn’t help. I’ve checked the ATF level and it is between the two lines on the dipstick.
Engine history: (from previous owner) The truck and transmission have about 180,000 miles. The engine was replaced with a 3.9L from a 1995 Defender with 60,000miles on it.
I’ve searched the forums and found similar issues but few remidies beyond Trans replacement or Lucas addative. I apologize if this issue has been addresses and solved on this forum before. (a Link to that answer would be Great.)
Thanks, Dan
