Tips on buying help
I'm new to the Land Rover world here but have always liked them and thought they were very capable vehicles. I'm now looking at a 98 Disco gasser I found on CL locally tomorrow and need some advice. It's got 133k on it, gas and a 98 that's about all I know right now. It will not be my DD it's primarily for winter, hunting and eventually offload. I don't know auto mechanic troubleshooting great but with advice am not afraid of and enjoy getting my hands greasy. Thanks in advance for any input. Forgot to mention asking $2400 OBO.

Since you are new to Rovers, I would suggest you pay an hours labor and have a Rover mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection and save yourself a lot of grief later.

DI tech section is a "what to look for" thread, read it.
Then ask more questions if you have them, these things are no different than any other car when buying used. No unusual noises, everything works and it runs well. ABS light being on is a non issue. Service Engine Soon light is a non issue. Use those to your advantage when negotiating a price. |

For what you are going to be using it for the Jeep would work just fine as well but the Rovers really are unstoppable.
Easy to work on as they were designed to be repaired in the field. The hardest part is electrical crap but thats not a common issue. I would never buy a DII, but thats just me. Low ball the guy if you are going to buy it, remind him that gas is only going up and these things drink premium fuel. They were asking $5900 for mine with 152k on it back in '07, I drove her home for $4500. So with a asking price of $2400 I'd wave $1800 in his face. Assuming everything checks out on it I'd drive it away for $2000. |
I just found a 99 as well in town for sale with 99K on it asking $2000. It looks to be in good shape but need to email the guy and ask what he has had replaced or worked on. I do worry hearing all the talk about the amigos. Once they are fixed is it gone or do they come back. I'll be checking out both the 98 & 99 this week. I noticed KBB for the 98 is almost 2x that of a 99 which I found interesting.

Be careful with the '99 as both the DI and DII were sold in that year.
The DI does NOT have the 3 Amigo's to worry about. You can tell a DI from a DII by the door handles, the DI has flush handles and the DII's stick out. |
