Whistling / Chirping sound when Heat is on

I've searched the forum and seen a few posts about this, so I know it's common, but I never really read any solution.

It's that time of year again when it's getting cold here in the Midwest. Everytime I turn my heat on the vents start whistling/chirping high pitched noise. When I turn the heat on full blast, it can go away, but obviously most of the time I'm not blasting heat, and I'm dealing with this chirping noise.

What is causing this? How can I fix it?

Leaves or dirt inside the blower motor up under the glove box.

There's a couple pages in the RAVE about the removal of the blower, seems pretty straightforward.

I'm going to be tackling this myself this weekend.

My "crickets on crack" noise was coming from the bearings on the blower motor. After pricing a new motor, I dropped the motor assembly, removed the squirrel cage from the motor, and removed the motor from the housing. I put a few drops of 3-in-one on each bearing, reassembled, and reinstalled. It has been several months now with no crickets under the dash.

Sorry but I'm a huge newbie. What's "RAVE", can you link me to this specific mention to the removal of the blower? I should mention, I'm terrible with cars, and this is my first Rover, so I'll be printing this thread to show my dad (or the local mechanic).

Thanks guys,
Hubie

The RAVE is a very large set of pages on lots of Rovers. To get at your noisy fan, drop the cardboard liner below the glove box. You'll locate fan from the noise. Three bolts and it drops straight down. Several hundred dollars, so be gentle. They get full of all kinds of junk (sticks, straw, leaves, trash, hood insulation). On D1s there is a plastic air duct that leads directly from the fan to just under the plastic tray below the wipers. I did the DIY pollen filter like the write up in the tech stickly area of the forum, and added a piece of the filter material into that air intake.
