deleting resonator

hey guys my muffler fell off the 96 disco about three days ago and was totally rusted out and choking off the flow, while i was under there removing the last piece of weld holding on i noticed the "resonator" was dented pretty good and im sure its baffles(if any inside) are just as bad as the mufflers. Can i delete the resonator and straight pipe to something like a flowmaster series 40?

i seen a few youtube vids where ppl deleted the resonator but didnt say wether there were any loses or gains, they were more focused on how it sounded at idle... any input?

also im pretty sure the cats on my 96 are not in the best shape, looking at those prices i see about $400-600 :( I was in autozone and seen a Mangna flow cat for $70...why are magna flows so cheap? would $140 for a set and what ever the cost to weld em on be worth it?

what we did it cut the flange off the old muffler go buy a muffler, we used a welded thrush (basically a cheap flowmaster) think you need 2.5" center in and 2.5" offset out

buy a blank section of 2.5" pipe lay the new muffler next to the old one cut the pipe to length so the overall is the same as the old muffler, attach the pipe to muffler set in place, position the flange and weld to new pipe

order a new over the axle pipe

install and weld to muffler

use a 45* piece then a straight with turn down all in place of the resonator

you will need to cut off and reuse the hangers they need to be welded on the pipe

sounds like a lot but it is not that bad about 2 hours think under $100 all parts from autozone or similar except the over the axle it is bought online

we used a thrush turbo 2, 4 years back with no resonator it was still quiet

now with the welded thrush no resonator and no cats it is not bad at idle, louder normal driving, real loud when you get on it

can't say fuel or power is better, if you like the sound of a chevy v8 with flowmasters there ya go

Thank you, im gonna print this out and see when my buddy an ironworker can weld it up for me.

any input on the cat prices? why are magna flows soo cheap and OEM parts more?

Magna are universal fit,so some mod on think The pass side may be necessary as the OEM is an odd shape and up on end with offset in or out

Well, I had some issues with my exhaust system so ran a straight pipe (no resonator). Heres how it sounded pre-muffler -

And thats the wife finding out what I did, hence pre-muffler..Added a Dynomax Super Turbo later but still find it a little too loud.

You can add a small muffler in the rear. The cats quiet it down too, especially if they're molten and plugged up. But if yours are missing or hollowed out, it gets somewhat loud even with both center and rear mufflers.
