2008 LR2 Won't crank/start
 

Hi, i'm new to land rovers but not to cars. I'm was a SAAB tech and now BMW. My sister-in-law has a 2008 LR2 that won't crank. Brand new battery.

Everything lights up when you insert the key and push start, but nothing happens when you try and start it. Its getting good power to and from the battery.

I'm thinking its the starter. The key goes in, the brake is depressed, the control panel lights up fine. It makes a single click noise like something is gently locking into place.

Before I go and replace the starter and have them waste the money, is there possibly something I'm missing?

Same thing happened to my 2008 LR2. It was the starter and the dealer replaced it.

The only thing I can add is that before this happened there was a gradual decline for many months with a couple seconds of hesitation before starting. I suspected it might be the starter, but was too expensive to replace on a guess, until it finally went out.

just a few suggestions

Here is what I would do if this happened to my LR2

1. Verify that the start button works, press it with the key in the dock and foot off the brake. If the radio and navigation (if so equipped) don't come on then I would start looking for a new start button

2. Assuming we get past step 1. Then I would remove the wire that connects to the starter solenoid and have someone else press the brake and press the start button while I check for voltage. If there is a voltage then I would suspect the starter (a hammer tap can often fix a stuck starter). If there is no voltage on the wire for the solenoid then i would check the switch for the brake pedal, if you don't step on the brake then the LR2 won't start.


That is where I would start at least.

#1 can be done by anyone

#2 requires some technical knowledge and a jack

Make sure that whoever installed the battery hooked up ALL of the positive wires...there's on the side that's easy to miss if it falls down when the battery is removed.

I just went through this trouble on our 2009 LR2 and turned out the starter had slowly been going bad. Got a reman started from O'Reilly for around $225. Worst part was getting the top most bolt out but overall it wasn't a terrible job to do.
