Has anyone had their transmission fluid changed on the Land Rover LR2 ?? I checked the manual but there are no maintenance intervals for Transmission Fluid change --

 

That's because the service manual says it doesn't need to be changed. Why do you think it needs to be changed?

 

Go to freel2.com and do a search for transmission oil change. If yours is the si6 Volvo engine, regarding that transmission (also used in many Volvos with the si6 engine), check on the Volvo sites for what Volvo recommends or you can google Youtube as well.

Freelander 2 is the North American LR2........now, there are many engine types but quite a few used the same transmission. My transmission is the 6 speed Aisin.

As you can tell, I don't believe in lifetime oils or fluids

 

Neither do I, but I also don't believe in unnecessary fluid changes, hence my question. It is simple to check if the fluid needs to be changed for some reason.

 

I actually found in maintenance passport that it says to change the transmission oil changed very 10 years -- I like to keep my car maintained and mine has 160k plus miles on it.. I would much rather do the regular maintenance than face transmission problems later.

These are the instructions, and the reason why most places like Jiffy Lube will not do this work.

1. Ensure that the automatic transmission is in 'P' and the handbrake is fully applied.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing.
3. Clean the area around the transmission fluid filler plug.
4. Remove the transmission fluid filler plug.
5. WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.
NOTE: Make sure that the vehicle is standing on a level surface.
Raise and support the vehicle.
6. Remove the front undershield.
7. Clean the area around the transmission fluid level and drain plugs.
8. Place a container under the transmission.
NOTE: The fluid level plug and drain plug both use the same point on the transmission. The inner plug is for level indication and the outer plug is to drain the fluid.
Remove the transmission fluid level plug.
10. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug.
NOTE: Install a new gasket.
Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
Torque: 47 Nm
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Fill the transmission with the correct fluid until it runs from the level plug.
14. Install the transmission fluid level plug.
Torque: 7 Nm
15. Add an additional 0.5 litres of transmission fluid.
16. CAUTION: A new O-ring seal is to be installed.
Install the transmission fluid filler plug.
Torque: 40 Nm
17. Install the air cleaner housing.
18. Connect the Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment. Start and run the engine.

If you don't have the diagnostic equipment you need a good quality reader that can plug into the OBD port and read the transmission temperature.

19. Using the diagnostic equipment to monitor the transmission fluid temperature, allow the temperature to reach 60 degrees C.
20. Move the selector lever from 'P' through all the gear positions, pausing in each gear position for 2-3 seconds and return to the 'P' position.
21. Raise the vehicle.
22. WARNING: Wear protective gloves.
Remove the transmission fluid level plug.
23. With the engine running a small amount of fluid should drip out of the level plug.
24. CAUTION: A new O-ring seal is to be installed.
Install the transmission fluid level plug.
Torque: 7 Nm
25. Install the front undershield.

 

fwiw, I changed it at 80,000 km .
1 look at the state if that fluid compared to new fluid had me thinking I should have done it earlier. Ditto for the rear diff.
The dealer wouldn’t touch the Haldex though. So I’ll need to go to an inde volvo shop to get that done.

Also, as opposed to reading the fluid temp from the ODBII port, I targeted the casing from underneath.

 

Mine was changed by an indy shop at 110K... the tranny was shifting funny. The change improved shifting quite a bit, replacing the torque mount improved it some more.

I decided to do it at 50K going forward (based on discussion on other forums and volvo spec). This will be my first DIY, planning on doing the repeat drain and fill method.

I ordered some AISIN ATF-0T4 which appears to be the 3309 spec required for the aisin tranny (early LR2s, after 2010 I think the switched to a synthetic spec). The LR branded fluid is of course insane expense ($650 vs $65 for 12 qts). Anybody know of a reason why I'd need LR brand instead of Aisin fluid? The tranny is Aisin, so the Aisin fluid should be OEM... assuming the LR fluid is just re-branded Aisin?

Been difficult finding the o-rings and plug gasket, I ordered several, will provide an update on that after I do the job. Didn't try the dealer yet, ours is so bad it's a last resort to drive up there.

 

I running the Aisin 3309 in mine and it's without issue. The LR is rebranded and ridiculously priced. I also ran synthetic and I find the Aisin 3309 better suited in general.
