AC - please help - urgent - dealer gonna screw me 4 sure
 

Hello everyone, need some assistance here. I have an appointment at the land rover dealership to look at my AC, they are telling what I am describing is not normal. However if I call other land rover dealerships, they tell me it is normal. I don't want to bring my car in to get worked on if everything is working normally as I am sure you can understand.

Here is what is happening:

1. When I press the recycles button, it goes off at random times, I have to keep a visual on it so once it is off, I press it back on again

2. when I press and hold the recycle button, the light on the button flashes about 5 times then becomes solid....then it eventually turns off automatically again. What does holding the button do and what does the flashing indicator mean?

3. Even with recycle on, if someone is in front of me laying on the gas, or, if I am in traffic, I can still smell exhaust. Isn't recycles supposed to block all outside air from getting into the cabin?

Those are my issues, and every 10 people I ask it's about 50% one way 50% the other.

Would love someone to be able to give me a difinitive answer so I truly know if this is by design or if there is something actually wrong that can be fixed.

It always helps by stating which model year, and how much mileage on your LR2.

Did you read about this feature in the manual? On some models, if the air in the car recirculates for too long, there is a risk of condensation forming on the insides of the windows. A timer function minimizes the risk of fogging or stale air when the recirculation function is selected by automatically switching off the function after a certain length of time, depending on the ambient temperature.

Thanks, yes it is a 2008 LR2 with 90k miles on it. So you are saying that functionality is by design then. Thank you for the reply! Now if I could just stop the exhaust smells from coming in the cabin while recycle is active, as well as finding out a way to disable that functionality. The binking light when holding the recycle button down is also perplexing.

The manual I have gave me no specific details on any of this.

I normally do not use recycle. Why would you want to recycle the small volume of air in your car? I would rather bring in fresh air from the outside.

If you are smelling exhaust from a bus or truck that is directly in front of you, that should be a very temporary situation until you can navigate away from it. But if you are smelling exhaust on a regular basis, that suggests you have a more serious problem with YOUR exhaust somehow getting into your passenger cabin. That is a dangerous situation you should look into closely.

Also, suggest you check the condition of your cabin air filter. This video shows how to access/replace it:

If your LR2 has the Auto type recirculating feature, then it is normal (the system senses the pollution and humidity and turns itself on/off as needed).

Recycle is on a timer, goes off so you do not rebreathe anything that might be toxic in cabin and keeps the windows from fogging. Normal working button doing it's job. If I get behind a smelly diesel etc., I hit the switch and don't worry about turning it off, as it does it by itself. Might want to get an owner's manual, it is in the A/C directions.
