Diagnostic Code p0458 Purge Valve

Howdy from Texas folks!
I have a 2008 LR2 That has a CEL and will go into limp mode if I drive it more than 5 miles, at which point it lights up every available light on the dash and goes into what I call limp mode.

After hoping I had won the big jackpot, and thinking money was going to come flying out of the vents, much to my dismay, neither one of those became true.

I plugged my scanner into to OBDII and got a number of codes...p0458,p0051, p0037,p0057,p0031. After digging around a little, I found out what these codes meant, so what I did was put in a brand new battery and replace the neg cable, and changed the gas cap. I then cleared the codes after hooking the battery back up, said a short but meaningful prayer, fired the thing up and drove off happily and I think I even smiled.

That was all fun and games. I went and put some fresh fuel in the tank, not full because Im not a billionaire, dumped a can of seafoam in it because I like that stuff, went to the next errand, and whammo the CEL light appeared again but was still running and driving ok.

Then I went to one more place, came out with my celebratory liquor, because I thought I won, although I still havent. (drank the liquor anyway) And the dash lit up like Times Square again and went back to limp mode. Called a wrecker got it home and here I am on this forum looking for help. I talked to my local Land Rover guy and he was so disinterested I think he almost fell asleep talking with me. He said I screwed up the evap system with the seafoam,(and that I probably stuck a purge valve) but what he didnt HEAR is that it did all this before I added that stuff.

There my story and Im sticking to it, please help if you have had any of the extra terrestrial encounters. Thanks and have a great day or night.

You may have angered the purge valve with the sea foam.

My purge valve stuck open once about two months ago and I have a new part on the shelf. I just need to replace it.

Note: the engine ran so rough I had to shut it off. It "REPAIRED" itself later..............but I plan to replace it.

I posted this on a different thread but you should check these also.

Take a look at the connectors by the front passengers feet and confirm that they haven't come loose.

Also take a look at the wiring harness under the air box.

These tips are from Diesel owners and intermittent connections for the diesel engine will likely result in a different effect than it will for us 3.2 owners.

And it is always possible that a mouse has attacked your LR2.

Good luck

Is that area by the passenger floorboard under the fusebox cover?

ThorInc 07-14-2022 01:12 PM

Yep., passenger footwell up against the firewall below the glovebox fusebox.

Ok I checked everything described. I pulled the airbox out and examined everything I could possibly check and dont see any evidence of chafing or mice or any invasions.
Nothing frayed or loose or obvious. I checked by the pass floorboard and those big plugs have what look like real good color coded 'locks" if you will.
They looked great and tight, fine in my opinion.
I took the MAF sensor out because I couldnt see the way the plug worked, so I blew it out with air because I dont have any MAF cleaner and was told not to use carb cleaner on it.

I did all this with the battery hooked up. I pulled one fuse at a time and blew all that area out (fusebox by the airbox) but nothing really obviously corroded or anything. Put all back together and it started up just fine, no CEL or any other lights on the dash right now, but I havent driven it yet. NOTE not sure if its normal, but when I shut it off and walked in front of it, after maybe 15 seconds I heard something bleed off, like pressure wondering if thats the purge valve releasing system pressure?

If it's the front of the engine compartment and sounds like a whine, it's quite likely the purge value? If it's the rear wheel well, it's likely the evap canister? If the CEL disappeared without you clearing it, I'm going to guess that one of the things you did cleared it. If your fuse is constantly blowing, you have a short to ground issue.

ThorInc it is right in the front when I was walking in front of the bumper, yes its a little whine for about 7 or 8 seconds. Is that a good thing or mean its leaking? I didnt clear the CEL it went off maybe because I blew out the MAF... I dont really know but Im gonna go blast it around and see what happens. The AC works so good it these

ThorInc 07-14-2022 03:36 PM

Nope, that whine is totally normal and my 2 cents, leave the MAF alone unless you have an issue return.

Well back to the start. I cleared all the codes, dash was clear, voltage was fine everything was looking good for a test drive. Fired it up, all the party lights are back on and everything it can display, it is displaying again.
