Told calipers are seizing up

Well I had posted about a noise in the rear of our 2009 LR2. Kind of a rattle. Took it to a new mechanic as our old one no longer works on LandRover's. He told me the calipers are seizing up and causing the noise. He claims the noise is actually coming from the rear differential and that I should get it fixed right away. He also said that because it is all electronic 4wd that is what is causing the noise. So the seizing up is causing the differential to make the noise.

Does this sound right? He is a hardcore German who will only use German parts. I am ok with that but he does want $900 to do rotors, pads, calipers, brake lines and replace fluid and bleed all the brakes. This seems somewhat high but don't have a lot of choice. This is our main daily driver.

It's more likely that the rear differential is making the noise on its own based on a lot of posts in this forum.

Ok thanks. Do you think the seized calipers could be causing drag and such that would in turn cause the differential to make the noise as he tried to claim? Basically he was saying that the calipers are seizing and causing problems with the drive train.

I'm not a mechanic, but my understanding is that when calipers seize, it only applies pressure to one side of the rotor or at least uneven pressure on both sides. It would usually cause uneven pad wear and vibration that you should be able to feel when applying the brakes. Whether or not that vibration can cause issues with the rear end, I don't know. but that vibration should only happen when applying the brakes. If it were me, I would get a second opinion or perhaps one of the forum members may know a more definitive answer for you.

Just an update to this. He was spot on. He did a full rear brake job with calipers, rotors, pads, brake lines front and rear and flushed the brake fluid. No more noise and it is running great again.

That's good to hear. Thanks for the update!
