Default Might not make sense...

...but the rear locker disengages nearly every time in reverse, for whatever reason. You're right though Dakota, the locked wheels even in reverse are still straight. Idk what the computer is doing, I'm only sharing my observations.

Flyer, the rear locker does help. The LR3 is pretty dang capable without it. I think the consensus, at least anecdotally, is that the TC does less of the work and the locker does more for HD models.

ok... FYI... Not sure it matters, I believe my LR3 is an HD model. Has rear locker and full size spear. Let me know if VIN # can let me know for sure!

Got back to sand hill this morning. It was very hard to get rear lock to engage. Took me 15 minutes getting wheel spin (stuck) before the rear locker engaged. Once it engaged, I could turn it off and on... even had it on in reverse for about 2 seconds. Had front and rear locked on hill in load, turn Terrain system from Rock Clime to off, I could feel the LR release some traction and load. Put in reverse and herd Pop sound but about 25% as loud. Repeated several times... sometimes heard a light Pop and sometimes nothing. Also, just went up hill with NO Terrain on, put in reverse and sometimes heard the Pop sound.

What you guys think?

There is no HD model, just the HD package. Spare size is not an indicator always as they can be swapped by an owner and even ordered with difference sizes.

If it seems to be happened more with reverse gear change than diff lock itself (again, there are clutches so its not a physical 100% lock) then re-read the thread here and look things over. You need to check the center support of the rear shaft for play (its behind a shield but you can grab it just forward of the shield, some slight play is perfectly normal). Check control arms, calipers, etc, etc, etc. Good luck.

Oh, one more thing. Ask the LR mechanic to make sure it had all software downloads. Mechanic said if it works don't do anything, a download may do something positive or it could screw something up..... You agree?.... Could this be software? Do I need a new mechanic

Yes, your mechanic is not very knowledgable of the LR3. There is a software update specific to the rear diff and is recommenced but this would not be the issue as it would throw a code. However the update reduces the risk of damage once its updated.

Your first post said it had the rear locker, now you are not sure? Have you actually looked at the rear diff? Being displayed on the screen does not mean you have a locker or not, FYI.

Yes, sure it has locking rear diff. Checked VIN before buying. Can see actuator on left side of rear diff.

I have seen many post from folks asking how to be sure... VIN is a good way. Seeing it on the side is for sure.
