lr3 problem
 

l am havin problems with the car just got it 2 month ago its a LR3 HSE 06, 75K. And im really ****in my self, the problem comes and gos its a thumping noise when l drive. It go's away when l put it in "N" or give it no gas, but when l put it back in "D" or any other gear it thumps constantly, the noise will go away but it will come back, it usually comes back when l go up or down hill, even over a bump. The noise is loud, but the car dosen't lose power.

Any Ideas?

Please inspect the one universal joint, it is on the rear drive shaft at the back end. Sealed for life, so that means any lube in it may have left the building with Elvis. See attached pages from LR3 shop manual. Also time to change the fluids under the vehicle, looking for any sign of contamination. The rear diff fluid is very specific, don't try recycled baked oil from Iffy Lube. Members with LR3s that have had differential problems have found them to be a high dollar repair usually.

Getting truck up on a lift where you can rotate tires, check motor and tranny mounts, etc., would be a good thing.

Depending on where the thumping is coming from, in my case it was a front wheel bearing....

The thump comes from the front, l cant get the side yet but when you drive you can feel a very small grinding on the steering wheel. But the thumping noise is very lound it sounds like the gears raming in or strongly changing (the noise is constant thump, thump, thump) but once again there is no loss in power and l can move gears 1st, D or even triptronic, but it will go away if l put the car into "N" and cruise, as soon as l put it in "D"again it will come back, but it will go away.

When the noise is present, does it change when steering left/right/straight ahead ? When my wheel bearing suddenly went (no warning noises) it sounded like one of the wheels was trying to get loose - and in fact when the shop put it up on the ramp I thought they had loosed off the wheel bolts already there was that much play. With visions of big bills to replace the transmission or diff it was a relief to be paying out only $400 for the hub and the labor ;-)

Went for a drive today with a mechanic (friend of mine) we notice the noise only comes when l turn sharp going up a hill or making a U TURN, also he told me that there is transfer case in the rear end of the truck where we need to change oil also!! is this right (l already change the oil on the 2 diffs)?

There is a front and rear differential and a transfer case in the middle...

Don't mean to hijack, but i'm in need of a new rear drive shaft as I was experiencing the same type of noise under load and my indy narrowed it down to a bad unit.

Was thinking of replacing it myself but had one question; the service manual states to mark the position of the two flanges before removal, but if you are fitting a new shaft would this even apply? Maybe the mark on the old shaft must be transferred to the new somehow so that it can be lined up properly? Anyone have experience with this repair?
