Default LR3 transmission issue.

Another LR3 issue 🤦🏽‍♂️. I was driving last night and stepped on the gas to overtake but i couldn't. Rpms went up and just came back. Never downshifted. Its like it tried to shift and gave up halfway. I tried this few time and only once it worked. Has anyone had this issue? Transmission was serviced about 30k miles ago with genuine ZF fluid and filter. When cold i experience some slipping maybe 2% of the times i drive it. Its a 2005 with 140k miles. Hoping its not a big issue.

There should not be any slipping. First thought is that the fluid level is not correct.

thats what i thought at first. I did look underneath and transmission area seems pretty clean. Are there common leak areas for this vehicle? I haven’t replaced the sleeve but that area seems clean as well.

Since you are getting slipping when cold, my thought is that is was not filled correctly since the service.

do you know if a low fluid level will affect all the gears or just a few? The downshift problem occurred when it was fully warm. Looks like I'm gonna have to do a service. Its due for one anyway

I have a very similar issue as you do. It tends to slip when it is cold. I just did a transmission service and replaced with the metal pan and filter. I did not notice any slipping prior. The slipping started about a week later. Once it warms up it seems fine.

I would bet you didn’t get the fluid level correct after your service.

Sounds like we both might have a low fluid level. Although in my case i cant find any leaks. I will try to dig deeper on the weekend to see if there’s anything. Im thinking in your case its a low fill.

Im with Armyrover. I believe in both cases the fluid level was not properly filled at the time of service.

There is a procedure for filling the gearbox and one part requires the engine to be running whilst you add oil.
