LR3 turning and skipping/ rubbing/ growling
 

Hey everyone,

This week my lr3 has developed something weird. When I turn, either left or right, I get a rubbing/ growling noise and I can feel it in my steering wheel. It's like it's fighting itself or something when the tire turns.

Also, since this has started, about 3 seconds after I turn her off, I hear some kind of slap noise from underneath. The best way for me to describe this is it sounds like a metal piece is being pulled into place with a spring really hard.

No leaks any where. No lights on the dash or messages.

​​​​​​I checked my power steering fluid and it is up to the right mark with no leaks on the rack. Differential and T-case have good fluids in them. I visually checked underneath and nothing looks out off place or odd. All rubber looks to be in good shape with no cracks or chunks missing. No visual rub marks anywhere. Nothing is loose as I tried to shake everything. I lift the tires off the good and have no play from 12 to 6 and very little play from 9 to 3 on the driver side. If the truck is on but not moving, I can turn the wheels all the way either way with no issues. But moving it happens.

So now I'm lost. Could this be something electrical messing up? Can anyone offer anything for me to check or replace?

If I was to take a wild guess, it seems like the front drive shaft does spin freely and binds when I turn.

Geez that would suck. Do those randomly go out like that? I replaced the fluid with Land Rover juice 2k miles ago. If I drain it, what am I looking for in there to determine if that is my problem?

Also, any thoughts on the metal sound after I turn the truck off? It sounds like it may be coming from the transmission area.

I'll take a look into this weekend. I did fail to mention that this only happens while turning slowly. Less than 10 or 15 mph.

I'm not sure if that changes anything.

I still wonder about the sounds after I turn the truck off and feel like it may be related as it started at the same time.

The loud noise - could it sound like the locking transfer case or locking rear differential?

It sounds and feels like it is coming around the transmission.

How would one test the CV or axles? The boots are all on and in good shape but I'm wondering if one is busted internally and that's why I have the issues while turning.

So I jacked her up and felt around the boots. I turned the tires by hand while doing it as well. The driver side (which is the side I suspect is the issue), made some noise while turning. The boots feel a little different than the passenger side. But nothing crazy although I'm not sure what it would feel like.

I do have free alignments from Firestone so I may take it in and see if they can figure it out .
