Muffled thumping noise
I have a 2006 LR3 with 128g mi and some newer tires. I have a muffled thumping noise that sounds like its coming from the back. The thumping speeds up as I do. It's a lot more noticeable during accelerating from a stop, then road noise drowns it out as I get to highway speeds. After only a year my front rotors are warped. Is it possible the rears are and that's what is making the sound? I've done an inspection of the tires, jacked the thing up to see if there was play in the rear bearing, but there is not.

Did it start when u changed the tires?
Move back tires to front to eliminate them as issue |

...haven't heard much about rear drive shaft issues in the 10 years I've been on message boards and owned an LR3.

"NJHokie's AvatarNJHokie , 03-16-2013 09:38 PM As it turns out, not only the exhaust was bad on this one. That was part of the problem. The real culprit, as it turns out, was the rear drift shaft. The splines and C/V joints are worn out causing the "rubbing" anywhere from 35mph-up. Fix is a new drive shaft. So many noises, so many fixes! ARgh!" The "rhythme" of mine sounds too slow to be a shaft....but what do I know.. |
Well....that's one.

Haven't had much time to dig into the issue. I did scoot underneath today to look at the rear drive shaft....and I uhhh...grabbed the shaft..I could push and pull on it and it moves around. Anyone know if the "front shaft assembly" of the rear DS is supposed to move? I figured it would have a solid feel to it. I didn't have time to remove the shield so I just grabbed the front assembly.

It's probably the Center hanger bearing, at least, and perhaps some slack in the u-joints as well. you shouldn't get much if any movement.

I'm getting all kinds of play at the hanger. Let me know if you can view the video link. How hard is it to replace the bearing?
