My LR3 plays a new tune now...
Well then...I can't figure out this one.
The other day I pulled away from a parking spot and the thing rattled. Like, noticeable rattling - backing up, going forward, turning left and right. It eventually abated, but caused me alarm. It honestly sounded like a dull tin can being dragged crossed with a grinding (?). I couldn't replicate it driving, but noticed It happens when starting from cold/parked. No codes from GAP. At first I thought I came from the engine bay, or perhaps lower. I've replaced the control arms etc. Question: What does the front diff sound like when it is on its way out? Is a constant noise? Could it be this? Thoughts? |
So the sound was only when in motion? Could be a wheel bearing going out. I had the oddest sound when mine went and thought it was ice impacted around the control arms or such. Was during an exceptionally cold period. And when driving the sound would go away. You can rule out bearings easily enough when trying to move the wheel around by hand.

Good question.
I was sure it made the noise prior to moving - hence I thought it was something in the engine bay. I will try and take note next time I start out. It was alarming though - almost to the point I thought something was about to fall off. |
Could easily be belt related. Pop the hood before your next start so you can hop out and get a better idea.
|
Could be timing chains on start up especially if adjuster is RS. Check you do not have a crack at the oil pump where the belt tensioner mounts
|
Or an exhaust shield

Yeah... I am not clicking that.

here on YouTube. |
Certainly seems engine related and given the clarity maybe something external. Water pump, tensioner, etc. Pull the belts and check out the components you can spin by hand.
