Oh Oh...White/Grey Smoke, smells like burnt rubber

Hello Everyone,
I am a newbie to this forum and would like to pick some of your brains.
After a couple weeks of non use I took my 2007 LR3 V8 (138,000 miles) out for a spin and after about 2km I heard a clicking noise from the bottom of the car and immediately a HUGE amount of white/greay smoke came out of the exhaust. I drove the truck home and the engine temp did not go above normal. I have tried to drive the truck once since then but as soon as I got out of the driveway more smoke. Any ideas? I have done a little research and i am thinking headgasket or PCV valve but I checked the coolant level which is fine and engine oil is perfectly clear.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Norm

Sounds like PCV failure.

I would change it out, quick and cheap enough. May take a few days to clear up all the oil in the intake/exhaust for no more smoke. If that is it, I would strongly suggest having a full induction/injection service to clean all the oil/carbon from it out, and then a full tune up.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. I changed the valve over the weekend and started the Truck. Upon first start it was not smoking as much as before and no engine light so I decided to take it for a test drive, as soon as I pulled out of my driveway and started accelerating down my street a huge amount of smoke came out of the exhaust. I decided not to continue my test drive concerned that it might be something else. I let the truck idle for about 20 min and after that I tried again because there was not a lot of smoke while idling, but as soon as I tried to accelerate a huge amount of smoke again. I spoke to a friend and he said I had to "drive it like I stole it!" or purge it to get the oil out of the exhaust system. So my question to everybody is would it be safe to test drive since there is no engine light but still smoking like hell?
Thanks in advance,
Norm

Sorry just another note.
Before I removed the old PCV valve the was a significant amount of oil residue underneath valve.

It was the pcv valve. Took is for a good drive today...smoking at first and even flashing engine light when accelerating but after about 20min running great. Valve was super easy to change and would recommend everyone to change it around 100000miles.
Next: front/rear differential oil change.

Water out of the exhaust pipe.

Hey Norm!
first of all… thank you for this! I am having the exact same issue. I changed the PCV today and I am still having smoke and it freaked me out so I will definitely try to drive it out. My first question is do you happen to remember a bunch of water coming out of the exhaust? Also did you happen to run a code reader? I have P0170-00 fuel trim bank one and p0171-00 too lean bank 1 and I am just wondering if it’s related.

thanks!!
Pete
