My oil pan is stripped on my 08 LR3 HSE. Found out when I went to the dealer for oil change. I already had that I impending problem last time I went for service. It wasn't leaking then, it's not leaking now BUT they cannot remove the bolt- so oil change is on hold until I decide if I let em change my oil pan. They quoted me $305 for oil pan, & $3,026 for labor. Land Rover of Hindsdale, IL said they have to lift the engine out to get to the oil pan. My independent mechanic said the same thing. Sumthing to 19 hrs labor time and he won't touch it cause he's not familiar w LR3's.

OK it is a complex task. I have attached the shop manual pages on it. Did not see engine lift but plenty of other fun stuff on the list. Perhaps lift bypasses some of this and saves you hours. But you have other options:

1. Suck oil out via a vacuum can (it attaches to shop air or a pump, and is built to pull oil out via dipstick hole, used by lots of fleets). Seal oil drain plug with sealant until repairs can be done.

2. Replacing the buggered up drain plug with another and re-threading the hole with a tap. Might be a different size. Might need sealant or gasket.

3. Replace buggered up one with an emergency one, it looks like a toggle bolt on a large washer with one side coated in rubber. You unscrew it slightly to drain, then re-tighten, don't take it all the way out.

Trust me, you are not the only mortal who has cross threaded an oil drain plug. Auto parts stores have an assortment of work arounds. And you can buy spares, I just bought a box of six for my Mercedes because Rock Auto does not sell them in singles at $1.29 each.

BTW, if it was Billy Joe teenage Ninja at the oil change shop, their manager is not going to be happy.....

I agree, it would be cheaper and work as well if you had a good mechanic or yourself "oversize" the drain plug hole. Drain it, drill and tap it up to a size you can get a drain plug for that's slightly larger than what you have now. Use a magnet to get metal chips out. You would have an odd size drain plug for that vehicle, but as long as you know, no biggie.
