Rear Locking Diff question

Hello, I recently bought an 06 LR3 HSE. When I was off roading in rock crawling mode I saw the two lock signs on the center and rear diffs when I went up a hill the center diff and rear locked. I am confused because When I look under my truck the diff doesn't have the locking motor on the rear of the diff or at least I don't see it so does my rover have a locking diff?

If the circle on the rear diff in the 4x4 info screen changes to red with a locked padlock icon then it sounds like your LR3 thinks it has a locking rear diff.

I suppose that if the diff went bad in the past then a prior owner may have taken a less expensive route and replaced it with an open diff, but I would hope not. Also, I don't know if the LR3 would show a warning light if the connector for a locking diff were left dangling under the car somewhere.

Do you have a local dealer who would be willing to take a peek to confirm the presence of a locking diff?

You can call the service department at the dealer and give them your VIN and they can tell you if it was equipped with one.

If the vehicle is equipped with the e-diff and the cable is not connected, it would throw a fault. I'm not sure how the display works / displays if the vehicle is not fitted with an e-diff.

If you crawl under it you should be able to tell by looking at it. The e-diff is significantly bigger and has an electric motor fitted on the top of it. The cable will connect to it as well.

You'll find some pictures of the locking diff here;

I have my window sticker for the 05 , it states additional off road package, I go to rock crawl mode it shows 2 pad locks, I do not have a aluminum spare but truck was hit in rear guess they could have swapped the rear and spare

The 06 hse does not appear to have locking diff or alum spare and its fully loaded

I thought I read that the nav screen always shows a rear locker whether you have it or not. I cannot check mine at the moment.

I am nearly certain that all of them show a rear diff with an unlocked padlock icon in a light greenish-colored circle. Only an LR3 with a locking rear diff will show a locked padlock icon in a red circle when in an off-road mode and conditions warrant it. From what I've seen while driving in rock-crawl mode, it will only lock the rear diff when there is some slipping (loose surface or a rear wheel not making full contact) and the steering wheel is straight ahead or pretty close to it.

I have read what Rob states above as well. I have seen the rear locker lock in plenty of conditions where there was no slippage, though. Sometimes it even locks when the center diff is open. The LR3 is quite liberal with the opening/locking of either diff, in Rock Crawl.

Thats exactly what i thought so i was very surprised when i saw that. I am going to look under tomorrow a little more and see if i see a motor on the diff
