Thermostat housing leak
My thermostat housing seems to be leaking . Went to my mechanic . Pressure tested it held pressure . Seems to be a small crack in the housing . Seems to drip so so slow about 1 drop every 30 seconds . Does anyone know if its simple to replace ? Any special tools ? Do I have to remove anything ( fan, or can I acess it easly ) ? Or how long it shoud take ?

Three bolts and housing comes out, thermostat is spring loaded inside it, a vise helps to hold the housing and twist the stat out of it. Workshop manual free download in my signature for LR3.

It is slightly more involved if you are replacing the entire housing, where it mounts to the engine. But it is still not hateful. To do that the throttle body needs to be removed, and it's a total 8 bolts after that I believe, a couple are a little tricky to get to, but doable without removing anything else with the right tools.

As Dave stated..if you want to replace entire housing it is a little tricky on two bottom bolts, that connect lower housing to the manifold, but with a few flexible adapters, it is nit the end of the world and taking off throttle body REALLY helps,now ..if your leaks on upper part , you are tempted to replace just that, but the problem is, if your lr3 is 2005 or 06, the new updated upper housing won't simply fit onto old lower part, so you are sort of forced to replace the entire unit , that comes with a thermostat already installed.
Bottom line is , if one part cracked , you not far from replacing other, it is just wear and tear from constant heat.That is what I did on mine , when bottom portion cracked.It is a bitch to bleed the entire system,if you have no Vacuum tools for bleeding the coolant, but with patience , it is durable, by regular DIYer.I was replacing all the rubber houses, so it took me a little bit longer to do just that, but I feel the joy of accomplishing something , that I fixed with my own hands. Seems like no matter what cooling system is touched by Rover it is rendered into rubbish bin. Bet that whole thing is made out of plastic. Will be about as sturdy as the hose barbs on a D2 radiator.

Thanks again for the input . I thought it was a bit more involved . Didn't want to say that it wasn't since I haven't had a chance to start pulling things apart .

I could not find a complete sequence to remove it, as they mention above. Here is one page from the engine section that shows where it is affixed.

I just posted a DIY for this. Its not as bad as you may think. Time to remove and re-install, 2 hours. Bleeding the system took about an hour and a lot of patience.
