Transfer Case Noise
So finally took my LR3 into my Indy to have a noise looked into. Basic are at acceleration I could hear and feel as if something were trying to wind up as if a bearing was loose. I thought it might be a wheel hub and reading the forum and watching videos. The Indy determined it was coming from the transfer case. He said there is nothing wrong that would prevent me from driving it and he would not hesitate to drive it for now. He said the noise will get worse and once it bothers you enough you can replace it. Has anyone replaced their transfer case? He has a new one for $1500, other brand new ones are around $1800. I have found a couple used ones online for anywhere from $500-$1000. Automotix seemed to have a good selection of used ones plus they offer a warranty. Anyone bought parts from them before? |
Why is his new one $300 less than "other" brand new ones? ...did he quote you for labor too?

Labor was $600-$700. And sorry the $1800 was a rebuilt one. Not sure why he has the other one. I have seen Brand new ones for anywhere between $2500 to $4000 but would have to get a core charge to get those prices which I don’t want to deal with. |
R&R a t case lists as 5 hours of labor, plus fluid.
One way to check the case is shift it to low, do you hear a clunk? Usually worn bearings will clunk. If you are at all mechanical, the swap is pretty straight forward. |
Make sure the rear differential isn't the culprit. Earlier model LR3s had issues with the interior coating deteriorating and trashing the bearings. My 05 had that when I bought it a year and a half ago.

Do you have the locker? The clutch packs in the rear diff can make a "clank" sound as they wear out....ask me how I know. :(

Mine is an 08 and from the way I hear and fed the noise it is up front. He checked both diffs and said they were fine. I dont have the rear locker. |
Occasional Moan from Tranny, Transfer case, bearings?
As I slowly decelerate or accelerate I get an occasional 1-2 second " moan". Sounds like the forward driver side area but I know difficult to locate from inside.
Anyone have experience with a similar noise? Just changed rear dif fluid. No unusual filings buildup on magnetic cap. Thanks Ben |
