Default 2013 LR4-Local Area Network

I have a 2013 LR4. I have been having issues with it since December. Thought bad battery...it wasn't. Thought starter...it wasn't. There is not a LR dealer in my area, so had it towed to a European motors auto repair place. They have contacted me saying that the issue is the Local Area Network. It will cost $500 to be transported to dealership and they said to expect around $3,000 or more. I wanted others insight because trying to determine if vehicle is worth it. Any suggestions would be more than greatly appreciated.

Did they say more specifically what the issue is with the local area network (usually this is referred to as the Controller Area Network or CAN-Bus)? Sounds like they just don’t know what’s wrong. Pretty difficult to give any help without knowing the symptoms, fault codes, etc.

Sounds like this repair shop is clueless about Land Rovers. I've never heard of any LR4 owner needing to replace the CAN-bus.

Where are you located? This LR4 forum is rather slow, so post the question on this more active LR4 forum that you are looking for a qualified LR mechanic in your area: https://www.landroverworld.org/forums/lr4.84/

Are you seeing many of the warning lights on? Could be a simple as a bad alternator. However, if the alternator has failed, it is probably because the passenger side valve cover gasket is leaking and dripping oil into the alternator.

Thank you for the reply. I am in rural West Tennessee. The nearest dealership is about 2.5 hours away. On Christmas Eve, I left open the back door when I was getting packages. I did not notice it. I ended up with Co-Vid....so did not go anywhere for 2 weeks. When I got in, car would not start. Figured I ran battery done. Put on charger overnight. Still would not start. Jumped it off and it finally started. It sat for a few days then would not start. Put back on charger...would not start. Took battery off to be check by store. It showed that it was good. Put battery back on. It started. Ran fine for about a week. Pull into gas station. When I went to leave, it would not start. Tow truck driver tried to jump...it would not start. Had it towed home. Put new battery...it would not start. Put starter on it...it would not start. Finally decided to tow it to import auto shop. They took almost a month before looking at it. That is when they called and said was CAN-Bus...and needed special tool that only could be done by LR. It ran fine until I ran the battery down. When charged, it would click a few times then nothing. I appreciate the input.

You may need to take it to that dealer that has the diagnostic tools to pull the codes and figure this out. Reach out to that other forum group and see if anybody knows of a closer qualified LR mechanic.

If you are planning on keeping the vehicle, I highly recommend getting a Gap IIDTool. Especially since you do not have easy access to a Stealership, or qualified indy. I would not own a Land Rover without a Gap Tool.
