2014 LR4 HSE - Random / Phantom - double honk
 

Hi Folks,

LR4 2014 - 78k miles - I suddenly started to get a random double honk. I have a new battery from March 2025, I have a battery tester and it shows the battery is normal. I have no lights on the dash. No warnings.

The issue can happen anytime between unlocking the car, or getting inside, or starting the engine, or putting it in to any gear, but it disappears once I start driving, the car moves and it stops. There are no double honks until I bring the car to a full stop and go in to Park gear, then suddenly can start randomly getting double honks again until I lock the car, after that no double honks.

Sometimes there are no double honks at all, sometimes it keeps doing it many times in a row one after another or randomly. SUPER annoying. People in parking lots giving me the stink eye. I checked all the latches, door handles - everything works and latches closed without the fob on me nothing will open.

The one thing I plan to check is the start/stop battery but there are no warnings on the dash.

Any one deal with this in the past? Any ideas?

The only time mine ever double honks is when I try to lock it and the rear hatch isn't closed hard enough. When it happens if I go back there and look at it I don't see any visible indication that it's not quite closed. When I then lift the rear window and close it quite firmly it's fine and doesn't double honk upon locking the door. My first thought then is maybe it is the latch mechanism in your particular case, needs to be replaced or somehow adjusted?

Sounds like a door lock module or a fob receiver may be on the fritz.

Typically the double beep (per the owner's manual) is a warning that either there is a door ajar or a fob inside the vehicle.

OK update - I bought the OEM hood latch and for now that seems to have stopped the random honks. Ill update in a few days if that was it.
