Default Considering Used 2010 LR4 HSE LUX

Hello,

New to this forum, but not to Land Rover - Previously owned a 2013 RRS.

Our family has grown a bit and we need something a 3rd row, so we have been looking at options and found a 2010 LR4 HSE LUX with 61,000 miles listed for $24,600

Admittedly, at first, we were hesitant to consider the 2010 due to age and mileage; however, we stopped at the dealership today and the car looks perfect. Dealers are closed here on Sunday, so we could only do a visual check, but it looks super clean.

My question to all of you: Is there anything we need to consider with the 2010s? Any known or recurring issues?

We would like to jump on this in the next couple days, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Timing chains can fail as early as 30,000 miles. It would be nice to know if they have been done already on that vehicle. If its a Land Rover dealer, hopefully it will be Certified Pre-Owned in which it will come with a pretty good warranty.

Mine is a 2010 HSE with 75k miles and has been outstanding. A couple of potential issues on these vehicles
- water pump fails (poor design) - by now I'd expect it has been replaced already and apparently the new ones are better
- heavy truck of it wears tyres and also pads/rotors fast. So check youvhave nearly new tyres and brakes and if not then use that to negotiate
- front lower control arm bushings fail / listen for a noticeable knocking at front end when going over bumps

Aside from that they are quite robust!

Thank you both for the feedback! We are excited to get back into a LR and this one really fits our needs.

I have read about the water pump and will review the previous service logs to see if this was done; fortunately, the LR4 was originally purchased and then traded back into the same dealership (one owner).

If these parts weren't previous replaced (timing chain and water pump), what do these cost for have replaced? I found a complete timing chain kit for $730, but could not find info on installation. For the water pump, I haven't looked.

The timing chain guides are what goes, and from what I can find online and my service manager and tech tell me it's rare and may be related to long oil change intervals coupled with harder use. If they need to be replaced it's ~$5k at a dealer, but rare enough of an issue that I didn't let it sway me when looking at early LR4s a couple months ago. I went with the cleanest one that I could find with a rock solid service history.

I don't know about timing chain - not an issue I've come across or seen much mention of. For water pump mine was done on the CPO warranty but I think it runs around 500usd (parts about a third of that).

Thank you all for the feedback. Unfortunately, someone beat us to the 2010 LR4 HSE LUX; was sold prior to us getting over to the dealership.

For now, we keep looking.

2010 HSE LUX Owner here with all options..

i had it for 13 months now and have spent thousands on it...

Purchased March 2016. Items repaired and replaced so far....

Water Pump. 3/16 one week after purchase dealer shouldered the bill $0
Alternator 8/16 $1480 Dealer
Keys not recognized. 8/16 $1080 Dealer Reprogrammed All Keys
Moon Roof Drain Clogged (known Issue) all water went in. $1020 fix the drain and pull carpet to dry the car

I will need new front brakes and rotors, $1450
I have an oil leak that I have to ask where its coming from.

I bought it at 59500 Miles and I have 70k on the odometer. I have to be honest, my LR3 was alot more dependable than this truck or my GL450...

I might just end up selling this and buy a 2013 GL350 which is super dependable.

Sorry to hear your issues. Sounds frustrating

I wouldn't pay a dealer $1500 for front brakes and rotors. You can get pads for $150. And measure the rotors - dealers replace every time but if I remember correctly they are 20mm new and are specced down to 17mm (check this to make sure - one set is 30mm down to 27mm) so quite possible you don't need rotors. front pad replacement is a quick and easy job (you could do yourself or any decent mechanic)

Unless warped, we typically see rotors needing replaced (too thin) every OTHER brake pad change. I don't know how Land Rover justifies $400 for a set of brake pads. Thats what I pay for Maserati pads.
